Lights.
As Cassidy Adalor is illuminated, it’s hard not to take notice of her gorgeous figure. She stands tall, a solid 5’9”. Her family’s genes contain nothing but the best, a fact that isn’t lost on those she encounters. Where genes cannot do the job, her training shines through. Cassidy’s body is toned, evidence of years of training. Wearing clothing that lets through a significant amount of skin, she makes sure others can see just how admirable she is. Her posture is one that elicits the word “regal,” showcasing the confident way in which she carries herself, like a queen amongst her subjects. Upon close inspection, one might notice the tiny calluses at the base of her fingers, but these tiny blemishes do not detract from the young woman’s beauty.
Her face belongs to a beauty queen more so than to a girl looking to make a name for herself in the Hunger Games. Her dirty blonde hair cascades down like a waterfall, falling slightly below her shoulders. The makeup she wears, sweat-proof of course, accentuate her deep blue eyes to make her appear equal parts fierce and seductive. The intimidation and longing she inspires in people are tools to be used to her advantage, a fact she never forgets.
Camera.
As the mic is brought up to Cassidy’s mouth and she starts to speak, it becomes evident that her appearance gives a clear indication of who she is. There is no hesitation in her voice, as no matter what she says, Cassidy expects it to ring true. She is the main character in this Panem production, whereas all those around her are nothing but the supporting cast and crew. As such, she has no worries about others talking back to her or shooting her down. As the star of the show, she shines brighter than the rest, so when she issues a command, she expects it to be followed.
She doesn’t view the Games as something to be feared, for they are no more than a challenge thrown in by the director, a way to build action and character development, and of course, the ratings. Death doesn’t bother her, because in her mind, all it represents is an actor exiting the stage for the final time, never again to see the spotlight. None of it truly affects her, thought that might also be because she has never experienced loss herself.
With her intent on being a star, Cassidy has no problems casting aside morals to achieve her goals. Considered by some to be an “attention whore,” she is willing to do anything to ensure that all eyes stay on her, instead of wandering to the supporting cast. To that end, she uses her skills as a trained Career, her wit and sharp tongue, and when all else fails, her captivating body. Although she doesn’t admit it to herself, Cassidy thrives in the attention, and without it, she loses her sense of self.
Action.
As the actors take the stage and start fulfilling their roles, Cassidy’s life story is revealed. Her need for attention stems from her family life. A middle child, Cassidy had always admired her older sister. She seemed to be perfect in every way, destined for greatness. There is no doubt in Cassidy’s mind that for the first 13 years of her life, she was nothing but an understudy, if that, to her older sibling, who seemed to command attention without ever trying. The Adalors were sure their eldest daughter would bring glory to the family, likely by participating in the Hunger Games and charming all of her enemies before brutally cutting them down. Their disappointment encompassed the household when her eighteenth birthday came and went without her participation in the Games. By failing to volunteer even once in all of her eligible years, she had failed to live up to her potential, and in Cassidy’s eyes, the moment her sister turned 19, she retired from the main stage, living the rest of her life as part of an ensemble, a star whose time was in the past.
Determined not to let her potential go to waste, as her sister had allowed hers to, Cassidy amped up her training tenfold in her thirteenth year, determined to be the best. She saw the chance to take over her sister’s spot in the spotlight, to finally rise from the role of understudy and become the star of the show. But when she looked to her parents for encouragement, they found the critics’ eyes staring not at her, but through, to the little boy who stood backstage.
Although Cassidy hoped to convince her parents that she was not her sister, they could not shake their belief that she would fail them just as her older sister had. Instead, their attention turned towards their youngest child, their son. Six years Cassidy’s junior, her brother hadn’t even been eligible for the Reaping when Cassidy took over her sister’s role. All logic pointed in her direction as the likeliest to take on the star role. Instead, her parents invested all of their energy in him, figuring that by the time he reached Reaping age, he would be unstoppable.
Eager to prove her parents wrong, Cassidy threw herself into training headfirst, spending every possible moment training herself to be the best. No matter how much she loved her brother, he had no experience on the stage, and she would not let him kick her out of her golden seat at the top of the playbill. Every year, she considered volunteering to prove her worth to the family and secure her spot as the greatest actress to grace Panem’s stage, but each year something held her back, a sense that there was still room to grow.
Now 18 years old and in her final age of Reaping eligibility, Cassidy stands tall, muscles rippling and eyes on the prize. When the next Reaping comes, she prepares herself, she will volunteer, proving to her parents once and for all that she is more than her sister. With her stardom at its peak, her skills as good as they’ll ever get, Cassidy will not retire calmly. If she is to leave the main stage, it will be as all greats do, carried out under a sheet at the climax of her final performance.
