more than a shot in the dark
"It should have been me!" Marina demanded of no one in particular while delivering a harsh punch to the wall of her bedroom.
"It's not fair!" she yelled, delivering another forceful punch.
"Why does she get to go? It's my turn!" her elevated voice demanded as she struck the wall again.
"I'll bet you the stupid girl dies first!" Another swift punch hit the wall, denting it this time.
After a few more punches and a few profanities, Marina had managed to put a hole in the wall. She was home alone, as she had gotten back to the house after the reaping just a little while ago, and her parents and younger sister went to go down to the market to buy some food. She knew she'd get in trouble for the hole in the wall, but at this point, she didn't care. Her knuckles were bleeding from the impact of her fist on the wall, and she didn't bother to clean the blood off of them or the wall.
Marina was furious. She had been wanting to get into the Hunger Games for years, and once again, it slipped away from her. She knew she couldn't volunteer, as she probably would've been knocked out by the girl who was picked or another person that was itching to volunteer themselves. Marina wanted to be picked, and she knew that if she were picked, no one would be getting in her way. She would be going into the games, and she would be fighting to the death. She would come out victorious, she was certain in her mind.
Walking away from the wall with her fists still clenched tightly, Marina swung her door open forcefully and then slammed it behind her, heading downstairs in a storm of anger, stomping her feet the whole time. She was infuriated about how the reaping had went that day, and wished she could have rigged it to send herself in. Of course, there was no way for her to do that, but she wished that she could have been able to.
Writing an angry note of 'be back later, probably' and placing it on the table for her family to see, Marina left the house in a wave of frustration. She decided that that only way to calm herself at the moment was to go down to the training center for the day and train until she couldn't hold herself upright any longer.
She arrived there, went inside, and did her stretches before then heading over to the knives. Taking about twenty knives, she threw with anger, causing her to miss quite a bit, which only seemed to increase her frustration. Not bothering to collect them, she moved on to other weapons. She attempted at using other weapons, doing just as poorly, as her accuracy wasn't very good when she was angry. She attempted swinging an axe at a few mannequins' necks, but didn't make much of a dent, to her disappointment and frustration.
'Maybe I'm not good enough...' she thought.
Then, she decided to try another swing with the axe, doing a small amount of damage to one of the mannequins, but not enough to satisfy her, causing her to slam the axe to the ground with frustration. The others in the training center would stare at her, thinking there was something wrong with her.
Marina continued her training for hours that day, until she began to feel lightheaded. She didn't care, however, and decided she would do some hand to hand combat training with another girl who was there by the name of Charm Jinx. Marina had only met Charm once or twice before, but she knew that she was a good enough opponent to test her skills on.
Charm had thrown the first swing, aiming a punch at Marina's head. She barely managed to block it, her muscles beginning to tire out quite a bit. It took quite a few tries before Marina managed to land anything on Charm, but she managed to kick her in the stomach when her guard was down, making her stumble backward. This didn't throw her off for long, though, as Charm then charged at Marina sideways, ramming her elbow into Marina's side, causing her to gasp for air before being punched again, multiple times. One last swift jab to the jaw sent Marina to the ground, unconscious. As Marina felt herself losing consciousness, she tried to stay up, but couldn't think straight. Her mind was foggy, and she faded out into blackness.
No one bothered to help the unconscious girl for the rest of the day, and it got to the point where her parents had no idea where Marina had gone. That night, however, when they were closing up, Marina finally awoke and realized she was still in the training center. The sweat soaked girl with bloody knuckles made her way home that night around midnight, eventually journeying home to be greeted in anger by her worried and furious parents.
