The sewing lessons with Bobby had been progressing slowly but surely. Bea was a quick study, and despite the lack of materials, resources, and time, she was growing confident every day. Her mind was starting to fill up with ideas, colors, designs, and possibilities; her new skills opened up new horizons. Some were closer than others.
One of Bea's immediate plans was to surprise her family with some hand-made clothes. They were not going to be very professional, or even possibly the same color, since she still had to scavenge for materials she could not afford from her saved money. But no matter; she knew her family would appreciate them anyway. They were a gesture of love, and also a display of a new skill that could help her family on the long run.
But for that, she needed someone to practice on. She could not make clothes without measurements, even she knew that much.
She picked Toby because he was the least likely to freak out, and also heavily asleep when she decided to put her plan into action. Sneaking into his room Bea tiptoed on bare feet over to her youngest brother's bed, measuring tape in hand, fiddling with it as it uncoiled. She had to be quick and quiet about it, and try to wrap the tape in a way that it would give at least a halfway accurate measure of Toby's body as he lay tumbled in bed.
Leaning over her brother, Bea forced her eyes in the dark of the room, wrinkling her nose as she tried to decide where to start measuring. Another movement, and her braid fell over her shoulder; surprised at the brush she jumped, and one of the measuring tape's ends slipped from her fingers, hitting Toby right on the nose.
