Ruby sat, bored, playing with her knife. She watched two boys fighting in the rink. Though it wasn't strictly legal to train for the games, it increased the drama for the capitalites, thus the government didn't intervene. As long as nobody died, the peacekeepers ognored it.
She touched the tip of the long blade. It wasnt quite sharp enough to cut her without force, but she could definitel hurt someone if she needed to. Half of the time she was tempted to use it on flirtatious boys and men, who only wanted her body.
A boy walked up to her. He was large and well muscled, with scars across his body. He was one of the other careers, she knew, though she hadn't met him before. He held out his hand to shake, but Ruby refrained.
"I'm Walker" he said, a note of cockyness in his voice. "And you are?"
"Not in the mood" she said threateningly. She gripped the hilt of the knife, playing with it in a way that was both seductive and a little psychotic.
He didn't seem put off.
"I saw you sitting here all alone and thought I'd keep you company."
Was this really his attempt at flirting? Ugh.
"I'll tell you what, Walker, you and I fight, no holds barred, and if you win, I'll let you keep me company."
He seemed to be thinking about this. She cocked an eyebrow, a silent challenge. He raised his chin in defiance.
"Lets do it."
She stood.
"When you give, pat my side twice." she stated, begining to remove her hearing aids. "I won't be able to hear you say it"
Though she wasn't entirely deaf, in the loudness and chaos of the room, hearing him call out would be practically impossible.
"Don't you worry about that," he said. "I never give. Safewords are for sissies"
She almost laughed out loud. Instead she walked to the mat. She was already in her training clothes, so she just removed her shoes and stepped on. He followed quickly.
They took their stances and began the fight.
He swung at her face but she dodged and gave him a quick undercut to the stomach. It fell true, but a hit like that would only bring a small person to their knees. He barely flinched, but she felt.his breath leave him for a moment.
He swung again. His fist collided with her arm, but she was used to the pain. She gripped his arm in her hand and used her other arm to elbow him in the face. Still, he didn't go down.
He may have been bigger, but she was quick, so his hits didn't land true. He tried time after time, but she demolished him. After several minutes, she finnaly used his momentum to knock him to the ground, and quickly put her elbow in his throat. He struggled to breathe, but didnt give in yet. His free arm hit her stomach and knocked the air out of her, but she put more weight on his throat.
Hid face was turning colors, but he must have really needed some "company" because he didn't give in. He used his weight to knock her off of him, but she was on her feet before him. She grabbed his arm and wrenched it behind his back until he fell to his knees. He wrapped his other arm around his body and reached toward her. Finally, he tapped her side twice. She released him and walked away.
She went back to the bench she was sitting on before and put in her hearing aids. The boy looked indignant, angry. She could have laughed.
He stood and rubbed his shoulder. She drank some water and continued to watch the fights around the room.
