"She isn't going to make it, look at her." "Her status is only growing worse." "You're a worthless freak." "Little orphans shouldn't be allowed to go to school." "Isn't your sister May Rhodes, you know the one who died." "All alone after all? Only makes sense."
Years of hate circulate within June's conscious all while her fingers toy with her ring of string. June was no princess, no victor, no one special. Tragedy clung to her skin like leeches and when one fell off another would replace it. Death placed its shackles on her from the moment she watched her Mother murdered by her own Father. June's body became a living bag of fear. Anyone she ever cared about left her shattered and blown to the wind like ash. Anyone who captured any sort of feelings from her either ended dead or unheard from again. Murdered by a loved one, convicted of said murder, slaughtered in the Hunger Games, and vanishing one night without even a whisper of goodbye.
June started life as another poor girl in the squalor of District Nine, but it was enough for her. She had two loving older sisters and two parents devoted to their children. The world they lived in was harsh and cold but their family was warm and safe. Fear never pierced their tightly knit circle, until one day it did. One day when a member of the family let it in as he murdered his wife before June's three year old eyes. As he then reached out to strangle her next but was thrown to the ground just in time by peace keepers. Fear never left the circle after that day, it became it.
Several years later would see the three sisters separated and scattered across the District. Panic attacks consumed June's waking days as her final safe havens were severed from her life. Immeasurable amounts of tears streaked down June's cheeks while her eyes never left the grey of a window pane. Even when a new family brought her into their home and kept her home schooled away from the demons of daylight, she stilled panicked every second. They raised her as their own alongside their other daughter Rose and everything seemed to slowly start to get better. Then a curve ball slammed into June's ribs.
Factory hours pulled June's new family away from her for much less income forcing her to the hellish halls of high school. Electricity laced with fear and anxiety shook June's body until she collapsed in the hall on her very first day. Laughter whipped around her from every direction until two bodies shielded her from the demons. After so many years she was reunited with her sisters as her eldest one went forth with the documents to become their legal guardian. It was only days after the paper work was processed May was swept away and slaughter and then only several weeks later April vanished without a sound. Of course though, there was more within this tidal wave of sorrow.
Following May's horrific death June was taken away as a prisoner of the Capitol's for assaulting a peace keeper out of rage and grief. Weeks of torture was prescribed to June's fragile body until one day she was finally thrown from a moving train back into the snow of District Nine. It was then, lying in the snow, June questioned if she should ever rise from the ice. Was life really worth living? Then the one constant thing in her life took her and all of her sorrow into his arms as he had done ever since she first met him shortly after finding her sisters once more. Their meeting had been faith formed within a small circle of trees on a forgotten bench. Through every horror June was hit with after their meeting he was there as well keeping her steady. And now it had led to him on his knee asking for her to be his for eternity. There was only one answer, yes. However they didn't make June any less scared.
Small tears slightly shuffled the make up on June's face while her fingers still toyed with her, his, ring. June had no doubt she wished to spend every last one of her moments with Sammy but the fear of him being taken from her was extreme. She couldn't take another loss, she couldn't take losing him, it would break her once and for all. Yet as Rose lightly cooed her and fixed her make up June accepted it. Sammy was the reason she was living, if he died then she did too no need to worry over it any longer.
Finally after hours of preparation June stood from her place by the mirror and made her way over to the small cottage's door. White laced with gold covered her from her golden vines of hair to her toes. Her adopted Father wrapped his arm with her while she let a long sigh escape her lungs. Just outside the door was a trail leading through aisels of people leading to the exact spot she had first met the love of her life. No longer would June have to wait and be cursed by her name. In these final moments as the music began to play from the violins as the door swung slowly open; while her fingers wrapped strongly around her bouquet of white roses and lilies, June was prepared to become a Gustav and shed being a Rhodes.
