Onyx didn't notice neither the heavy clouds above her head as she was slowly walking home, nor the flash of lightning right behind her. She was trying to think about her schoolwork and her brothers getting into a fight earlier that day. All four of them were currently in detention. Her little sister went to see her aunt and her big sister said she would like to visit a friend. Three more family members at work... There was only one left. Onyx tried to remember, who it was. It had to be Ave. She was about to come home earlier today. Of course, it would be much easier to stay with her than with the little children. Onyx smiled with relief and continued walking.
The first drop of water ran down her chin, soft and warm. She looked up and saw the darkness consuming the whole sky. The rain was getting stronger every minute and Onyx thought it was time to run. The atmosphere cracked in two pieces and the lightning hit something far away. Perhaps a tree. Onyx saw the huge flames rising from somewhere close to the fence.
She speeds up and runs even faster than she ever did. She never knew she was capable of running that fast. There are only a few streets left. Her heart beats like it's not human already, it's about to burst if she doesn't stop. Her foot gets stuck in the mud, she pulls it out and runs, runs, runs...
Home, sweet home! She can finally see it and rushes forward. A loud bang on the door. Three seconds of waiting. Another bang. Waiting. Catching breath. "Open the door, Ave, please!". Her voice sounds pathetic. It never was that weak and quiet. What if Ave isn't at home yet? Onyx has forgotten her key on the table... She can hear someone walking towards the door... It's opening. Onyx storms into the room without thinking, mutters "Thanks" and only then she realises that her left foot doesn't have a shoe on it. It must have been left stuck in the mud. She stares at her leg in confusion and lets a nervous laugh out.
