I never expected anything special to happen today. It was just going to be a normal school day - chatting, learning and having as much fun as possible and then going back home to eat, study and get some sleep. What could go wrong? Obviously, nothing. Or so it would seem...
I am walking home alone today, because my best friend has to go on a date. I have been doing this for a while already (since she has managed to find herself a boyfriend). I try to make myself think I'm okay with it, that being a bit lonely for some time doesn't make any difference. But I always remember I'm walking those streets alone while she is enjoying herself somewhere else, probably on the other side of the district, and this thought stings me right in the middle of the heart.
I almost miss a left turn, then go back and disappear in a dark, empty street. I always have to pass this narrow creepy place on my way home. Frankly speaking, I often think about getting myself 'a special someone' just to have somebody to go in here with. I look around and try to increase my speed to the maximum point. The street has almost come to an end and I almost sigh with relief, glad to be out of there, but a strange sound attracts my attention. I look left, hear a woman screaming and see a ruthless-looking man climbing out of a house window.
"This is a robbery", - I think, -"And that's the robber". A vicious criminal. I have to scream and run away as fast as I can, maybe even faster. But my legs are glued to the ground. They are made of some heavy metal, they are not willing to move on. And I just stand there and stare at him with terror in my eyes. He knows I'm here, he looks in my direction and charges at me with his arms stretched out towards me. Life is over. And it's not even the Hunger Games - I'm just going to be beaten up on my way home. How stupid. I can only see those mad eyes and the enormous hands. I feel like fainting right here and now. He can think I had a heart attack if I pass out, perhaps...
He raises his hand... And strikes. But I don't feel any pain. Someone rushes between me and him, taking the blow which was meant for me. The robber hears something in the distance and suddenly forgets about us. The Peacekeepers are probably coming because of the noise. (A few people's footsteps are echoing in the distance). I look at my saviour and see a boy about my age, very thin and pale. He's lying on the ground, knocked out by the robber's mighty hand. I kneel down beside him and tap him on the cheek. His eyes are opening slowly and he finally looks at me. "Are you all right?" - I ask in a worried tone. (Actually, he's not. I can tell this by the blood running from his thin nose). He's not answering, so I decide to say something else: "Thanks for saving my life. That was really brave of you." Hopefully, he will say something this time.
