Anthem - Day 7

The ache is bone-deep. Your wounds weep and fester, hidden behind layers of dirty bandage. Every part of you is tired in a way you've never felt before, alone in this nightmare now that your partners have left you to die. But you aren't dead yet, and you see their faces on the backs of your eyelids when you try and sleep.

It comes fleetingly. Every position puts new pressure on your battered body, and you barely sum up the energy to open your eyes as the Anthem cuts through this eternal night. Its oranges and reds and yellows are blinding, the colour of blood and flame and infection, as bright as the dragonfire that still burns the back of your skull. A sunset of brutality.

There are few enough tributes remaining that all the names and faces are those you've known before. A ghost instead of a stranger.

The light fades out and leaves you back in blessed nothingness. You're starting to crave the darkness, the oblivion that it brings. Whenever you have sight to see, you either look upon the faces of those who have fallen, or those who will fall by your blade. You see nothing but specters, and some nights you wonder if you'll ever see anything else again. If you'll ever hear anything in your head except the promises of the void and how tempting it grows each night to just reach out and... fall.

Instead, you roll over and sleep with your corpses. They don't take kindly to being forgotten, not like you ever could.

God, you're tired.
