I rinse my hands in the sink and look up at myself in the mirror. I have signifigantly improved since even just a year ago. My dreams are no longer normally tortured by the nightmares filled with Lily and Paige's screaming as the die. No longer filled with Lily's missing eye and Paige's neck bleeding a deep red blood. I can never truly get past their sudden dissapearance from my life, but for now I can sleep. The dark rims under my eyes from lack of it have dissapeared after only a few nights of the rare restful sleep. My pale face has started to regain a bit more color.
I step out of the cramped bathroom and into the hallway which I then proceed to walk down. The laughter of Paige and Lily haunts my memory. I can remember them so easily still, the memories only slightly fogged over. I can still remember the two little girls, tiptoeing down the hallway to try and peek through the door to see the television while the games were on. I can still remember Preston and me swiftly jumping up from the old couch and rushing over to them, closing the door behind us and bringing them back up to bed.
One time when Paige managed to evade detection, she had cried out while she saw the replay of a head getting bashed in, Caeser Flickerman laughing and yelling about how strong that hit was. I can remember leaping up and rushing over to my sobbing sibling, picking her up and wiping away her tears before bringing her a cup of milk and telling her a story about Princes and Princesses, Dragons and Knights, tales from a land long forgotten. Then she would pick up from where I left off, her face begining to smile as she would invent a new character in the plot or add in a loop. I can remember how it was her favorite pastime.
I take a peek into the television room where Katelyn Persimmon was on a date with some other big celebrity I didn't know the name of. My hand moves to pick up the remote and flick the channel, cringing as I saw the replay where Justice Fray, the newest victor, cut down the girl from seven who had been the only thing standing between him and victory until recently. I pressed another button again where Caeser Flickerman began reporting on the victory tour Justice Fray had been on for a while now. I didn't quite catch the number of what district he was in now. Probably 5 or 6 or something like that.
My legs move me over to the kitchen where I grab out of a little stash of money thatmy parents keep. It's my job to go out and buy some chicken and bread tonight for dinner. Chicken Sandwhiches, yum. My bright green eyes flick around the room before I walk out of that room back into the hallway. Mom and Dad haven't bothered to erase the stick figjres Lily used to draw on the walls yet. I don't really think they ever will.
I step outside into the heat, taking my steps towards the town center where the first place I would stop of would be. One of my favorite bakerys resided there.
On the route to the center of the district, I passed multiple factories, all pumping smoke from the top. Probably where they create erasers or something like that. I cover my mouth as I pass by them, only gagging a slight bit when the smoke slithers through my hand and into my lungs.
When I reach the town center, I notice the stage a group of peacekeepers are setting up for when our district is "graced" by the new victor's appearance. I personally am not planning to attend his speech. It's always the same boring thing. Your tributes fought vallently blah blah blah. Not worth my time.
I step into the bakery, there isn't much of a line as usual. Most people can't afford to even buy a little sliver of the hardest bread from here or any place. I walk up to the counter and the lady there takes a bit of money and in return hands me a warm loaf of bread wrapped in a brown material.
I say thank you the lady before proceding towards the door. As I open the door I realise I am in the way of someone. Slightly startled as I hadn't seen anyone out there, I step to the side and say in my quiet, polite voice, "Oops, sorry." I avert my eyes shyly from whoever had been there, kind of embarresed from the not noticing whoever it was out there.
