DISCUS THROW

Welcome to the Decathlon tournament of the second Panem Olympic Games! The track and field complex is located within the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the backstop, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character setting up for their throw, and then paste the code [*roll=825+4100] without the asterisks into your post THREE TIMES and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This will result in a four-digit number that will correspond to a distance, which is read with a decimal point separating the first two and the last two digits (e.g. 4509 is read as 45.09 meters) Each participant will be measured by their best throw only, not their average distance or the sum of their throws.

The competitor with the furthest distance wins this event. Distances for this event will be continually updated on this thread; however, the overall decathlon standings will be updated on a separate thread.

After you have rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction to each throw if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post your throws whenever you please. Keep in mind that this event must be wrapped up by the end of the Olympics Day.

Discus Throw

As I awaited my turn with five other people before me, I watched their technique. I watched how they threw the discus and how they held themselves when they did so. Seeing where the discus landed for other people, I wasn't sure how well I would do, but I was there, and I had signed up, so I knew I had to at least give it a shot.

When it was finally my turn, the announcer called my name, and I went to take my place where I was meant to be so that I could throw the discus. I hadn't watched the Olympics the past two times they had taken place, so I wasn't quite sure where my sudden interest had sparked from, but I was glad I did it, as it was a new experience for me.

I readied myself and threw the first discus, watching to see where it would land.

I wasn't entirely sure how well I did with my first throw in comparison to the other in the competition, but I got ready to make my second throw. I threw the second discus and watched to judge its distance.

I had one last shot to do my absolute best, and I prepared myself for whatever my result may be. I wasn't usually a super competitive person, but today I certainly felt like I was. I threw the last discus and watched it fly.

Benitone Andralian stood in his spot, ready to throw the discus and destroy the competition. The wind was behaving like an indecisive child, changing direction every few minutes.

It was just Benit's luck that the wind started blowing his way while his first throw was in the air. He cursed under his breath, angry that his result hasn't been that great.

He readied himself for the second throw, however, and this time, he timed it perfectly. Not only did he throw well, but the discus caught caught the wind's current and flew farther than even Benit himself had predicted.

He knew his competition was fierce, but he doubted many would even come close to such a feat. He'd shown his worth, and that was all that mattered.

He probably should have tried on his last throw, but the second attempt was still in his mind. He wanted to show his superiority, so he did something he was sure those watching would either call brave or stupid. He threw the last discus lightly, without a care in the world. He turned around before it had even hit the ground, and walked away proudly, smirk on his face.

The discus.

Katrina had always had a love for ranged weapons; granted, the discus wasn't traditionally considered a weapon or it would have been in the cornucopia at some point, but in the right hands it could be deadly. It wasn't a javelin, but Katrina was confident that she'd still do well with it. She could see it now, imagining the sponsorship she'd get if she was reaped and an olympic gold medalist to boot. She could be the one to put district four on the map since Leon Krigel was doing a great job of resigning his tributes to the history books. No better way to earn honor and glory. No better way to be remembered. Katrina grabbed the first discus and let it fly, before hurling the other two. This was all her, but she couldn't wait to get to the javelins.

I watch the others throw. Study their movements. Each technique, I go over in my head. How I can perfect it. Beat it. That's when some district four contestant manages to come within a few meters of a perfect throw. A whistle escapes my mouth. Just when I thought this event would be a walk in the park. Now not only do I have to try, I have to get virtually a perfect throw just to beat the woman. I can't let her win. My eyes narrow, and I wrap my hand around the tiny disc. How hard can it be? I take my place, and I throw. I won't let some pathetic excuse of an athlete show me up.

Writing Thinking "Hears" "Says"

The air was cooler in District Four. The first thing he had noticed within arriving to District Four. The crisp and clean smell of the ocean, only walking distance away from the spot he was at. This wasn't what he had planned to do at all, but it was a way to make it up to Neil. A way for him to remember Neil by taking part in something that Neil had done. The olympics. There was a gentle breeze as the girl threw the discus in the air, landing it farther than he could ever do it. A record of sorts had to be broken, just had to be from the perfect throw that he had just seen before him. Techniques in the idea of doing this were vast. Learning them in such a quick time would have to buff his distance down, but he wouldn't give up, not then, not ever. He prepares to throw the discus, hands ready, body ready, muscles ready. It was his turn. He'd do it, for Neil, for himself, for everyone out there watching him and his smirk.

District Two

Panem's Third Olympic Games

With the chamber's of his wavering heart Tommen could feel his heart threatening to escape its confinement. A million eyes poured upon his sky light skin as all of Panem tuned in for these games. Instead of blood there would only be glory and failure. Failure, a thing Tommen knew all too fondly from the tormentations his Father shackled to his existence. Even now as Tommen's feet dig within the dirt as he watches discuses grace the sky in flight he was not free of his Father's fearsome bonds. This was Tommen's first major showcase, the first time since Circe could not represent his family. The first time he was sent to hunt alone. Just as always, failure was not a possibility or damnation awaited his return to hell.

Eventually time transpired to leaving Tommen standing alone amidst the vast stadium. Above him the sun shone brilliantly upon his tanned skin as his icy blue eyes gazed off towards the future. A future laced in praise not in beatings. A future with a Father figure who wouldn't send his son into bitter darkness. Tommen wasn't sure what the other athletes were here fighting for, but to him it didn't matter. Within the weight of his discus he could feel his sorrow mixed with his past. He could feel the memories all rotted with regret and disappointment. But the moment the discus left his hands, the weight was gone. And a new day could finally blossom from a dying rose.

I've never been out of One before.

I'd seen the stills and videos of the other districts from coverage of the Hunger Games, but stepping foot in another district is different. Strangely different; each pace taken on Four's soil and I feel wisdom and warfare beneath my feet and it's exhilarating yet eerie—sensations I know only too well.

I walk wild avenues filled with people. Skin could turn golden brown in this summer sun, yet trees like skyscrapers shelter us from it's rays. Four is a place that is built by an artist, whereas in One, our lifestyle revolves around practicality.

And so, we live in a small world designed by an engineer.

The audience align like stars and there are more than I could ever count. I tilt my head to the sky, staring with empty eyes to the universe above.

In this place I could be anyone, or perhaps no-one at all. Huh.

But there on the screen reads my infamous name—Peggy Fray—and I'm reminded of that word that brought me to this place in the first place. Glory, smothered in ribbon and encased in plates of gold. The goal is to have it around my neck, to wear it as proof that a career could prove herself as an overachiever.

The goal is to hang up a medal on the rogue branch which grows through the window of our old tree-house. That's where all of my treasures are kept and collected. Memories are threaded into the bark and one glance is all it takes to clear my mind.

I could do with a clear mind now. Discus in hand, I just have to throw it as far as possible. Power in the upper arm and weight in the forearm is all it takes in training to throw knives and medicine balls, this can't be much different.

And I'm a Fray, after all. I should be destined for success.

I've never been out of One before but the crowd cheers and screams when my name is called. I step into the zone physically and mentally and compose myself for the first throw. The previous contenders made it look so easy, and surely, I could do the same.

Right? Right. I'm a career after all—but then again, they are too.

They thought she couldn’t be sexy and powerful, but she could crush a man’s skull between her thighs. Relish in the blood and dye her hair with it. She didn’t care about leaving men in the dust because everyone loved to belittle the strippers. How could a woman rely on her body to make money yet still reign superior?

Except she didn’t rely on her body for profit. She relied on others’ fantasies and desires. It was them, not her. And when hands got grimy, she had to break them.

Breaking records was nothing she expected to achieve. Careers were obsessed with the Olympic Games, but she was not top class or a popular vote by any means. Mirage hid herself beneath the radar for a reason. Publicity was only important when she sported lingerie and fishnet stockings, but the hype for these games were enough to urge her out into the daylight.

The discus throw was an interesting test of strength. It certainly sounded easy enough, so why not give it a try? There was no dignity to lose, not when she had lost so much more. A medal was nothing. Dignity? Nothing.

She threw it and wondered if he was watching. He’s not.

I don't know, how I manage to survive with so many people paying attention to me every day. And I absolutely refuse to think about how I will endure the crowd cheering in the Olympics. The only reason I signed up was the chance of feeling the taste of victory without having to stab, bite, or punch. Besides, I have always wanted to see the world... Even if this is not a ride through the entire country, it's still an unknown district.

While I'm standing here and thinking, people are throwing on and on. My turn will come soon. But I'm almost the last, so I still have plenty of time to mentally prepare for the throw. Do I really need to prepare, though? I know I don't want to disgrace my family in front of all these crowds, but I also believe that nothing is going to change, if I stress myself out about the results. I will just go there and throw this thing as far as I can, it's no big deal.

...Has my name been called out? Yes, looks like it. The person before me has already made a throw and I am next. I suddenly realise, that my lips are pursed again. They'll probably think I'm an idiot if I don't take control of myself immediately. I walk to the place I will be making my throw from in a confident manner, with a cool and joyous Career girl smile on my face. I remember throwing sticks and toys while playing with my dog, for him to bring them back. Today isn't going to be any different from then, this thingy is just a little bit heavier. I take it in my arms and throw it. One more time. And one last throw. Could have been much worse, than that, so I think I'm satisfied.
