It was rather early in the morning, and I wasn't usually one to be up before the rest of my family, but when I opened my eyes, and looked at the clock to see it show that it was seven in the morning, there was no falling back to sleep. I rolled out of bed and got dressed. After eating a quick breakfast, my mother had awoken and I told her I was headed out before leaving for the day. It was a Saturday, so I didn't have school, which meant I could spend time doing what I wanted to.

When I walked quickly down the sidewalk, I wove through crowds of people. I didn't have a reason to be going quickly, but simply liked to live my life at a quicker pace. As I went, I saw those that I recognized and those that I didn't. Eventually, I arrived at the place I had been heading to, which was the District Square. When I got there, I saw people here and there, but it wasn't as crowded as it could have been. There were shops that people were entering and exiting, and people simply talking in groups. I, however, was by myself at the time.

As I looked around, I observed my surroundings. There was quite the variety of people in the District Square right then. I greeted those I knew who passed me by, and even decided to greet some people that I was unfamiliar with. After a while, I decided to sit on a bench, just to take a break from standing around. I kicked my feet up on the bench, as no one was sitting next to me, and watched as people went by. Observing for a while, I eventually got rather bored and closed my eyes for a moment. I likely looked like I was sleeping, however, I was still awake, and able to notice what happened next.

As I was lying there, I felt someone messing with the watch that was on my wrist, and immediately sat up, looking the person in the eyes. Then, as soon as I yelled a quick 'hey', they ran off. I was more alert now, and looked around. Why hadn't anyone, of all the people around, tried to stop the thief? I then noticed a boy standing nearby, and decided to speak to him.

"Hey, did you see anyone trying to steal my watch just now? They must've thought I was asleep, and when I noticed, they ran off. I was wondering if you happened to see who it was." I said to the boy.

"Remember Cosmo, two bags of rice and some blue thread." My mother reminded me as she dropped a pouch of coins into my hand. The aroma of the herbal tea she was steeping on the kitchen table was quite pleasant. A few days ago I found a small patch of the herbs growing along the fence; a treat worth bringing home. I nodded my head slightly, having heard the message from her a hundred times in the past hour. It's not wrong of her to be worried. Buying a few simple goods at the market was a lot of responsibility. Bartering with the merchants and getting the best products for the few coins you have is a heavy weight on your shoulders. I kissed her on the cheek and left the room, listening to her hum a tune I'd never heard before. I rested my hand on the cold copper door knob, stalling before I'd have to leave. The past week the weather had been so unbearably hot that I dreaded ever leaving my home. I turned the knob slowly, letting my hand leech the coldness from it as much as I could.

I stepped outside, shocked at the refreshingly cool air that surrounded me. The sun had finally given District 5 a break. The roads were busy this morning, everyone heading to the market to buy their things for the following week. I walked on the dirt road next to my small home towards the market. Our house was located close to the market, so it didn't take me very long to get there. The District Square was packed with people. I walked around trying to find the dry foods and thread stall, having no luck. I walked over to a small sitting area, where a few people were sitting at some benches, one boy in particular seemed to even be napping. I scanned the area for the stalls. There, I thought to myself as I spotted a woman handing a man a bag of grains over the counter of her stall. The sleeping boy seemed to snap awake as a man rushed by me with a watch grasped in his hand. The boy watched as the man ran away and then turned towards me."Hey, did you see anyone trying to steal my watch just now? They must've thought I was asleep, and when I noticed, they ran off. I was wondering if you happened to see who it was." I wish I could've told him information about the guy, however I was only paying attention the dry food stall. The only thing I noticed about the man was that he was wearing a battered red hat. "Honestly I didn't really get a good look at him but I did see he was wearing an old, faded red hat. I can help you find him though."

I had spoken to a boy that I spotted nearby, asking him if he saw anything. Unfortunately, he didn't have much information to share. The information that he shared wasn't very helpful, as he said that all he noticed about the guy was that 'he was wearing an old, faded red hat'. Then, the boy proceeded to offer to help, and at first, I was thinking about taking him up on his offer. Although, when I thought about the fact that the person hadn't actually managed to steal anything from me and had only tried, I realized that it wasn't worth pursuing him.

"No thanks." I told him. "I do appreciate it, though. I just don't think it's really worth trying to find him, since he didn't manage to take anything from me successfully."

I gave him a smile of thanks.

"Oh, I'm Eagle, by the way." were the words I chose to introduce myself with. Perhaps I could just have a casual conversation with this guy. Friendship would be a good thing. I really didn't have a large amount of friends, so it would be nice to make some new ones.

I glanced behind me briefly, just to see if there was the off chance that the wanna-be thief was still around. Unfortunately, it was to no avail. He certainly wasn't in sight, and was probably long gone by the time I even got a description of what he looked like.

People almost never tried to steal anything from my family and I, due to the serious lack of money that we've always had. The only reason I even had a watch that anyone would ever be interested in trying to take is because I earned enough money over the course of a few years to purchase it for myself. I think the main reason I bought it was because of how lost I always felt not knowing what time it was. Nervousness about being home late was certainly a factor, too. I hated being late whenever I went somewhere. Being early was always much better. Luckily, the wanna-be thief was a bit too late in his attempt to steal my watch.

In that moment, I glanced down at my watch out of habit. To my relief, there were no scratches or fingerprints from when that guy tried to take it from me. He was being careful. Clearly, he didn't want to ruin its value. Perhaps he was smarter than he seemed. Then again, maybe he was just lucky he didn't scratch or smudge my watch. Some people have that pure, dumb luck happen to them.
