Justice Fray. That name was burned into her memory, alongside Patricia Valfierno, Atticus Manor and the damnable trio from district eleven. Once again, the games had been such a letdown. Katrina had hoped, hoped that Teach had had enough in him to make it to the end, even if he’d been leaving himself all over the arena in the meanwhile. Him and Scout Krigel had been true careers in the end, going out with style after doing everything possible to make it as far as they could. Major props for not letting little things like running out of food stop you. Instead of laying down and dying they’d eaten what they had to. It had been rather disgusting to watch, but thankfully the Capitol had censored most of it.
At least there was a chance to regain some of district four’s honor in the Olympics.
Go for the gold, her trainers had told her. Bronze was bullshit and silver was second-rate. She had tried to keep their teachings in mind as she had competed, visualizing the win and all that, but she wasn’t convinced it was working. It was so much easier just to cut loose and let raw energy decide. Katrina yawned and stalked around the grassy courtyard in the center of the Olympic village, stopping every now and then to pull her legs back and stretch. There were plenty of other careers milling around, some practicing, others lollygagging or shooting the breeze. She wondered mildly how many of them would be competing against her before her vision settled on a girl coming out of the direction of district two’s section of the village.
Dark brunette. At least five inches shorter than her. Maybe a year or two younger. It was hard to tell with careers from one and two sometimes; a lot of them were into hair and skin products that made them look older or younger than they really were. In Katrina’s opinion such things weren’t as popular in four. All that shit would wash off the next time you got in the water. Not to mention that she was a bit dolled up considering where they were. Where did she think she was? The Capitol’s next top model? The bachelorette? Katrina snickered to herself. In comparison, she was wearing a simple tracksuit with with a large four emblazoned on it. The official gear of champions.
Yeah. She could take the brunette in a straight fight. Easy. Grab her by the shoulders, knee to the stomach, followed up with an elbow to the side of the head. She’d never see it coming. One and done. Katrina smirked to herself and walked in front of the girl. If there was one thing she enjoyed, it was challenging others to see what they were made of.“What’s with the getup?” she snorted, staring down at the other career.“You a cheerleader or something?” Katrina laughed at her own joke, blissfully unaware of how obnoxious she was being; not that she’d have cared if she had known. “Not gonna have anything to cheer about when district four sweeps the floor with two.”
