He was intrigued. It was his first time to stand on the sidelines in his entire life, but Kellan Fray was intrigued.
Even as Justice stood center stage, readying himself to head back to the Capitol, this time as a mentor, Kellan never found himself gritting his teeth or resenting his younger brother. Kellan wasn't meant to be in the games: fine. It was time to focus on something else.
Incidentally, the ‘something else’ stood directly to his right. Pyrite’s hair was pulled up and her eyes penetrated the crowd, searching for the lucky two who would compete.
He still hadn't gotten her confession out of his head. He thought of it all the time, how she came into his room and confessed her love for him. He remembered having one thought:
It’s about goddamn time.
She had been right. Pretending not to care about her had become pointless. He knew, she knew, everyone knew it was a facade. He was so stupidly in love with her that the idea of the games had become an afterthought long before he was too old to compete in them.
He wasn't entirely sure, but he thought this might have been what happiness was.
And then--
“Pillar Fray!”
It couldn't have been true. She was fucking Pillar. She was his snotty little sister who had dragged flea-ridden animals into his room and begged him to help her fix them. She was the girl who was a doormat for his other brothers and sisters to wipe their feet on until the day she finally stood up to each and every one of them.
Except Kellan.
What had she said to him?
He couldn't remember. He had almost forgotten to breathe as his little sister ascended to the stage.
What had she said to him?
This was ridiculous. No, it didn't matter. This was a career district. There were people like him who had trained for this moment for their entire lives. Someone would be taking her place. He was so sure of it he had to fight the urge to laugh.
But no one spoke up. Maybe it was because she was the sister of a victor. Maybe they were intimidated by her last name.
Fuck.
What had she said to him?
The moment the reaping was over he stormed into the Justice Building, spitting a quick: “You know who I'm here for.” to the guard before shoving open a wooden door.
And there was Pillar: alone, fucking helpless as always.
What had she said to him?
“You… Don't even get me started on you.”
