Dusty, at only eight years of age, didn't have a chance of being picked in the reaping. No, but many of her siblings did. With six siblings and most of them at reaping age, it was hard to keep everyone safe. They'd done so well with their luck for so many years, but this year was different. This year, Bolts was chosen, and Dusty, along with her mother and other siblings, had to say goodbye to him in the Justice Building. It was extremely difficult for all of them, knowing they may lose another family member. Dusty already lost her father when she was two years old, and hoped she wouldn't have to lose her eldest brother.
"Mom, what's going to happen to Bolts? Will he be okay?" the youngest child of the Spark family had questioned her mother. Her mother told her the very unfortunate truth. She told her young daughter that she didn't know what would happen to Bolts. She didn't know if he was going to be okay, and this crushed Dusty. After their time in the Justice Building, Dusty immediately clung to Joule. Joule was just a few years older than Dusty, but Joule had always been the one who was closest with Bolts, so Dusty knew that it had to be effecting her, too. She immediately embraced her older sister in a hug when they got home, and the two had a hard time not crying as much as they wanted to.
The family had a very quiet dinner that night. It didn't seem as if anyone had really wanted to talk. Dusty, however, did speak up at one point. Since Bolts wasn't home, the oldest child there was Cordelia that night. Dusty decided, even if it hadn't been the best idea, to speak to the eldest sister.
"Cordelia?" she asked, "Since Bolts isn't here, are you going to help mom instead? I feel like I should help too..."
Immediately after she said this, however, her face went a noticeably bright red. She realized that it wasn't the best thing to ask. She knew that no one wanted to talk about Bolts being picked at the reaping, but hadn't thought about it when she said it. Immediately, the girl apologized.
"I shouldn't have said that! I'm sorry! the girl said. Now, tears had begun to well up in her eyes, and she got up from her chair, running away from the table and into her bedroom. She felt, in a way, guilty for what she had said.
