Even though it is fake, the gore gives me a sense of calm.
I'm pretty sure that wasn't the desired effect. When a wave of crimson spays from the dummy's head I should recoil, be disgusted or be entirely numb to it. I shouldn't stand there, sword between my white fingers and sigh with a sense of shaky relief. It's all fiction, all a fabrication of the truth but watching the toppled dummy form a pool of blood around its head makes the corner of my lips twitch.
I'm shrouded by hard work and endless turns and falls. The training center once had a smell of new lavish lavender but now it's simply fictional red and sweat. Not that I dare complain, I prefer it this way in all honesty. Naturally, we are all drawn to what we know and what we are familiar with. Flawlessness was never a concept I could truly grasp, it was always alien to me. Unlike the whitewashed walls I could spend hours staring at back in District One, this training center was too flawless for me.
In the corner of my eye I spot Torka Hammerfell himself (marked by nothing but a number like the rest of us) and I instinctively raise an eyebrow. Until now, I hadn't seen his face because I don't dare allow my survival to become a plan of action ('Watch the reaping recap videos, get to know your tributes) so his volunteering remained a mystery to me. I only know him through heresay.
Dark buzzed hair, tall and muscular: He's the son my father would kill to have. He's a good little career boy.
I drop the bloodied blade and stroll towards him. When I look at his toned arms I imagine them detached from his body, when I look at his jaw I imagine it clicking under my fist, when I glance at his blurry eyes I want to shove a spear through them and I oh so desperately want to plant an into his skull. I don't want to be powerless under the perfect career son.
I want red.
"When they told me the guy who couldn't touch a gold medal volunteered I almost didn't want to believe it. Aren't two games failures isn't enough for your family is it, Hammerfell?"
Give me red.
