Key waited for him on a cliffside at the edge of eternity.
She wasn't sure exactly how she'd known to do so. It had been a tug in her gut, insistent and unyielding. A whisper in her ear, a gentle request that's origins remained a mystery. She heard it all the same. Will you go to him? The answer had come immediately, without even a hint of hesitation.
Always.
She'd found her perch atop a rock right near where the stony ground dropped off. Perhaps there was an ocean below, or perhaps a canyon, but she didn't look down anymore. She wasn't going that way. Instead she looked up, eyes searching the spread of stars that existed in this world completely unrestrained. They shone more brilliantly than they ever had through the smog of Three, and she dared say they were even more beautiful than the Capitol's pathetic projections. It had snowed recently, a light white powder that dusted over everything, but now the sky was completely clear. Entire galaxies were swirling above. She glanced back, toward the direction he was supposed to be coming from, and frowned impatiently.
A bottle of alcohol sat at the base of the rock. She wasn't even sure if she could get drunk anymore - it was more for the memories than anything else. She wanted to remind him of a time before they'd gone and complicated everything with blood and murder. Before the Games had split them apart and damaged their friendship seemingly beyond repair. She'd briefly considered meeting him at the tower in the exact spot where they'd met, but quickly decided she wouldn't put him through the torture of reliving those nights in the Capitol.
While she'd never admit it, she'd missed him. Eternities passed like heartbeats in her new world, but she still felt his absence keenly. He was meant to be among the living - Fate had something in store for him, as she did all the Victors - and she wouldn't in a million years wish upon him a premature death.
She heard a crunch in the snow and her head whipped around. She didn't leave footprints, not anymore, and it had been so long that she was beginning to wonder why she ever had. But a living soul still would. She saw his shadow emerging, slowly taking form. She'd meant to be serious, but she supposed bringing the alcohol had thrown that notion to the wind, hadn't it? A smile tugged at her lips and she turned to face him, crossing her legs and propping her elbows on her knees.
A wave of memories flooded over her when his face finally came into focus. Screams echoed in her mind, and behind her eyelids she saw arcs of blood. It was a fraction of her life in the mortal world, one that she tried desperately to forget, but if she was going to be with him she supposed there was no avoiding the ghosts of her past. She steadied herself, and her smile grew when she saw his disoriented expression.
"Kirito. Long time, no see. You're not forgetting me, are you?"
you had your maps drawn
you had other plans
to hang your hopes on
every road they let you down felt so wrong
you had other plans
to hang your hopes on
every road they let you down felt so wrong

"Kirito. Long time, no see. You're not forgetting me, are you?"
if you're lost out where the lights are blinding
caught in all
the stars are hiding
that's when something wild calls you home
caught in all
the stars are hiding
that's when something wild calls you home
