A gentle breeze ruffled his hair as he chased the birds through the grassy field.
In death, Iain was given a new life, new found freedom, a new hope. It started the next book in the series of his life. While one had ended, another opened, and the fourteen year old enjoyed it, but it wasn't complete yet. From the moment he crossed into this new world, Iain searched for his friend. Ceci was somewhere, and he wanted to find her, to hug her, to apologize for allowing her to die. For a moment, the corners of his lips turn upside down. It has been a long, terrible time without having her at his side. She taught him so much throughout their short time together.
But in the afterlife, time didn't exist - it was swallowed by a black hole the moment his cannon sound.
The odds of finding her was slim to none, yet Iain refused to give up. He was stronger than ever.
Iain ran and jumped without any problems in the world. His twisted leg wasn't twisted anymore. Everything he wanted to do as a child in Panem was possible now. For the first time, he climbed a tree. It was bittersweet, though. His parents weren't around to see him. They weren't there to celebrate his first steps in the new life. Tobias wasn't around to greet him with a hug, but none of that mattered in a world where he would wait for all eternity to see them again.
Maybe one day, Iain would have the opportunity to introduce Ceci to his family.
He had to find her first.
"Ceci!" He called out, pushing blades off grass to the side. Stopping in his tracks, the fourteen year old turned in every direction. Beads of sweat rolled from his brow. Clouds offered little shade from the sun reflecting through the sky. The odds of finding her were slim to none, but Iain had all the time in the world on his side. It froze in its tracks leaving him the rightful age of fourteen for however the afterlife decided to keep him.
"Ceci!"
He cried out again, heart sinking into the pits of the unknown.
Licking his lips, Iain moved on, a genuine smile twisting across his face. He would find her if it was the last thing he did because he wouldn't rest until she was safe and sound. Maybe they would share jokes again. Maybe they would fly on the wings of eagles as they soared high through the sky. It was something he looked forward to. Something he longed for.
But first he had to find her.
It was important.
"Ceci!" He cried out one last time, but he found nothing.
It was hopeless, but he wouldn't give up. Iain would search to the end of the world and back until he found her. Yet he couldn't help but wonder if they came to the same world.
What if she wasn't here?
There was only one way to find out, and he wouldn't rest until he searched every corner, crack, valley, mountain. Only then would Iain accept she was gone forever.
