Think. Speak. Hear.
Did my father get cosmetic surgery on his ears to hear better without my knowledge, because he sure as hell was quick to cut me short from my daily midnight escape to another world.
As always, it only took a few minutes for me to shut down the shop while he got settled in bed before the other side of the portal that was the entrance was just within two soft steps through it; but just as my fingertips pried the sheet of glass away from the opening, his grabbed a hold of my arm and yanked me away from it.
He didn't hear the bell, did he?
He couldn't have.
I detached that thing the day after my first time exploring the dead yet tranquil universe I was transported to, when the bright flames in the sky fell for bright speckles to take its place.
Did he find the bell?
A soft jingling catches my attention as this thought crosses my mind, and I turn to where the sound came from. Of course, lo and behold in dad's hand, was the golden kiss of death. My eyes move up to his face, going over every wrinkle that framed his steely gaze. I curse under my breath as he holds his chin up high and slowly makes his way over to my small frame, which dons a short, sleeveless black dress under a ruby red cardigan and dark brown fur-trimmed boots which sit right underneath the knee.
He sighs loudly. I don't contort my expression in any way as he continues eyeing me up and down with clear disapproval for some more moments, before he opens his mouth again to speak.
"...You didn't think I was gonna find this in the back of my dresser, did you?"
Well shit.
My face transforms into marble at this very instant. Nothing is said, and no face is made still.
"You're not leaving this house at night anymore unless you actually plan on coming back with something. Groceries, stock, boyfriend, girlfriend, I don't care--but there better be something useful for me, you, or for the both of us coming out of your future trips now."
I fight the growing, terrible urge to grit my teeth as instead I begin to combat his rock solid gaze with my own. He clearly takes note of this as he immediately stops words from pouring out the crack between his lips, turning this confrontation into nothing more but a cold stare-off. Neither of us are relenting for what feels like forever, but in reality only a few minutes as he then backs down first at last, looking over at one of our glass jewelry cases sitting in the middle of the room.
"Get to work. You're gonna be in here the whole day today."
This time, I actually do grit my teeth.
He walks away, and after I condemn his sorry ass to myself I drag my feet over to the portal. The "Open" and "Closed" sign hangs next to it, and I pull the board off of the nail it was hanging under and dress the glass in it, flipping it to the former side. The last thing I see before I walk to stand behind the cash register is a bright red canvas with a white border, obstructing me from the view of the world I came to knew, which would become the world I would come to know when everything darkened.
"Carat of a Rose," I mutter to myself as fingers impatiently tap on the counter in a wave, over and over again. "A store that sells a whole lot of bullshit."
