they all need something to hold on to
they all mean well
pay your respects to society
giving me hell
they all mean well
pay your respects to society
giving me hell
"Where you goin'?"
Cord paused at the door, her hand brushing over the splintering frame. Charlie was swinging his feet at the table, tracing patterns in the chips on the surface. He wasn't brave enough to look her in the eye - he was a kid, he would learn in time - but she walked back over to him anyway, towering over him until he glanced up. He was stubborn enough that he didn't shrink away and getting bolder every day. He held her gaze. She softened, but only slightly.
"I thought we agreed you weren't goin' to ask me that no more." She raised an eyebrow. "You don't need to know where I'm goin' s'long as I promise to come back."
"You gonna go fightin'?"
The corner of her lip twitched upward. She could hide the blood even the stitches sometimes, but he never missed the bruises. She was a fighter by nature. Both her brother and their mom knew it, but both had a hard time accepting it.
She shrugged, trying for indifference. Charlie was the only person who could ever make her feel it. "Nah. Just goin' for a walk."
She'd barely been out the door fifteen minutes before her first was connecting with someone's nose, but that was okay. Charlie had known she'd been lying anyway.
The man stumbled back, cursing colorfully as a stream of blood dribbled down onto his chin. She dodged a blow intended for her head but was too slow to miss the one directly to her stomach. It felt as if someone had hit her with a ton of bricks, and she stumbled back until her spine hit the brick wall of the alleyway as she gasped for breath that wouldn't come.
"You think you're so tough, don't ya, girly?" The man spat. His breath reeked of beer. "It'll be my pleasure to get you off these streets."
She couldn't breathe, but Cord's scarred lips pulled back into a grin anyway. "Don't matter," she wheezed, arm coming up to protect her face. "I'll always come back."

may your dreams come to reality
if all else fails
give up, we needed the company
let's drink to your health

let's drink to your health
