Tobias had never thought of himself to be a boy that was one with the beach. He could bet that people who had never seen huge bodies of water like he has would die to have quite a luxury and beauty to be in their existence. He didn’t use the opportunities of the beach that he saw so many people, young and old, male and female, take advantage of. They would swim, go fishing, and play ball on the beach.
Toby used to play like that when he was younger and with his brother. Zeke and him would play for hours, racing from a certain point out in the water back to the shore. Tobias would manage to beat his brother every time, but shorely Zeke would let him win, he knew that now that he is older and Zeke is gone. Growing up had given Tobias a lack of incentive to be a child. Maybe, he thought, maybe if I grow up my mind will too. And I won’t have to fear the nighttime anymore.
Instead of playing or swimming, Tobias laid a blanket upon the sandy shore as the sun began to set. He would relax, fully clothed on the beach, and watch the sun fall back into the land below the Earth.
Today was one of those days. The sun was just falling upon the water when it happened. His hands were held up by the palms of his hands. The sun made the sky an amazing ray of color. From yellow to orange to red to pink, and then to the regular dark sky. The stars were the only things that proved interesting to Tobias come nighttime, but they were not the only incentive for him to stay awake. Fear triggered his urgency to stay awake, just to watch the sun set for a couple more minutes before going home. His insomnia was the urgency to stay awake, and the fear was that if his eyes were to rest, childish nightmares that he should’ve outgrown years ago would reappear like the snap of two fingers.
It was at the moment that he began to see the sun’s reflection paint itself upon the sun, and combined with the gentle wave, a sense of calm came upon Tobias.
He didn’t think to open his eyes again and try to stay awake, he couldn’t have. His fears always made him stationary; they made him afraid to move.
His eyes closed, despite them begging him to let them be opened again.
His hands dropped and he fell asleep on the beach, his head covered by his arms.
It wasn’t long before he began to dream. He dreamed mostly of darkness, with flashing images of nightmares that made him so desperate to stay awake.
Zeke stood in front of him, motioning with his hands for Tobias to follow him. Tobias didn’t have the choice as his mind decided to walk toward his brother for him. His brother stood no more than three feet in front of him when the horror started. Within the blink of his dreaming eyes, his brother was in a chokehold by the monster that every day, Tobias had felt as if he was in an everlasting battle with.
Stop! Please! He tried to speak out to the monstrosity but his voice could not be heard. Instead, his actions spoke. He ran up to his brother, and pulled with all of his force to get his brother away. When it worked, a sense of relief laid upon him.
However, that relief was gone when he looked into his brother’s eyes. It was almost like a replay of when it happened the first time. Tobias saw a blank, lifeless face.
Zeke?
He looked down to see a deep puncture mark, and blood like a river that flowed down his dark blue shirt.
It didn’t take long for him to scream aloud in the conscious world, just as the moon was rising over District Four.
