◇
Ripping spears out of a dead girl's body, she spits on the ground for good measure and leaves her broken body in the dirt.
Red. In her mouth, in the backs of her eyes, in her dreams. She becomes it. Rage against the storm she treks onward, battered - not broken. (Yet.) Blood in her veins, she stitches up woulds with trembling hands and lets the rain wash away her sin.◇
The boy from Ten tells her of her wrongdoing and she smiles at his words, blood in her teeth, hellfire in her eyes.
"I don't believe in God-"
Ready, aim-
"But I'll see you in Hell."
Fire.
He erupts in flames sent from her hands, javelins strapped to her back like wings of an angel sent from the depths of the Earth. Fallen from grace a long time ago, death wraps itself around her heart and nestles in the pit of her chest like it had always belonged there.
Canons like heartbeats, four to her name, she feels them coarse through her blood and singe her chest. Death purrs at their sound. She smiles.
(Now I am become death.)◇The fourth canon dances in front of her eyelashes in the morning light, rain rising her from the comfortable depths of sleep. Silence, save for the light drumming of weather against the ground, and she rises to a vision of morning sun and a wandering figure mere breaths away.
"Paisley?"
The girl smiles, bare feet like raindrops pattering towards a great crack in the mountain.
Samira blinks - and she is gone. So has the rain.
Familiarity mixed with insanity topples her toward the cave, sleep still clouding her eyes. The world is bright, memories and reality blurring together. The road to tracker jackers, Death clutching bony hands, and waking up to her saviours now desolate, their footprints dissolved into the dirt as if they were never there. As if none of it happened.
This must be a dream.
To the mountainside she walks, following a ghost of a girl back home, remnants of souls who used to sit in her chest in the place of her heart. Death shifts with the light as she crawls into the earth. Waiting for the world to go dark. Waiting for the mountain to creak. Waiting for canon fire. Waiting for Death to take hold.
In the darkness, she finds light.◇
"Reese?"
She is dreaming. He's not real. He's-
Still. But breathing.
Hands caked with blood, a broken nose, clutching his knives to his chest. Left to die, left for dead, she lurches toward him with cautious hands and lifts a finger to his sullen skin.
"Oh, Reese..."
He turns to her and his eyes look something frightening. Familiar. They remind Sam of endlessness, of gaping holes in the Earth, of bloodshed and Hell.
Death laughs.
She gives him life again.◇
He barely speaks, so she fills the empty spaces between them with her hands. She falls asleep beside him, fingers tangled together in the darkness. Whether or not he can feel her, she finds comfort in his pulse at her fingertips.
Canon fire at night. Two strikes, an anthem. Death warms to a lull in her bones.◇Red, hell chases her down soon enough. Three canon fires in her sleep. Death calls from within and brings them to her, a test of stamina as she pulls Reese from his dreams and drags him away from disaster.
("But I'll see you in Hell.")
Eyes alight, she stares into the abyss of hell and finds Ten staring back.
They chase them through the Granite Flat on weary legs and frantic heart beats, snarls and teeth by the breadth of their necks. Desperate, she flings Reese forward toward the henge where she left him and wonders if there's a middle ground between choosing him and choosing her sisters too.
Trembling earth, she finds the ground in front of her barren, cracked and littered with red. Skin like a mirror, her own ruptured limbs scream to keep running, white-hot knuckles clutching Reese's hands. Figure on the distance, she must be going mad.
Pillar stands, albeit shakily, panting, hair flying in the wind. Majestically torn, her armour hangs loose from her body and blood flows from her leg as if it were desperate to leave her imploding frame. Red, against the tip of her sword. Red, pooling out from her feet. Around her, four beasts lay still - red, black, yellow, a palette of her destruction.
Hell still chases them, but they've come for Pillar too.
They scramble, feet hitting the ground below until dirt finds grass, grass finds stone, stone meeting scrabbling palms and gale force winds and the three of them teeter upon the mouth of Hell, mutts screaming as their giant paws slip against jagged pieces of stone and their bodies fall back down from where they came from.
Skin on fire, lungs on fire, Samira breathes.
In, out.
They have to kill her.
Spreads her arms as if to take flight, a javelin bursts forth from her back and she aims, Reese mere meters away, for the kill.
Death takes hold of her fate, his own grip firm against her heart.
"You know what happens next, Pillar."
You win or you die.◇
