A fresh layer of snow covered the ground and District 10's chilly winds nipped at her uncovered fingertips. She breathed in the fresh air, a scent that could only be described as winter. Via had already done her duties for the day. The kids no longer needed her help and all the goats were fed and milked. That meant it was time to take Raisins out for their daily walk.
Despite the intense cold that the District brought during the season, Via was determined to take her pet donkey out for a walk everyday of the year. She had read that a healthy donkey needed plenty of exercise, and how was she to disagree? Raisins was getting old. Everyday Olivia had with the stubborn mule was precious, and she was sure to make the most out of every moment she had with it.
The cold nicked her palms as she fingered the door of the barn where many of the goats and Raisins were kept during the winter season. A grin appeared on her face at the sight of her pet, who stood unaware of it's surroundings, picking at some leftover scraps that were left in it's pen. "Raisins!" She called out with a smile. The donkey lifted it's head at the call of it's name and whinnied. The clop of his hooves hit the barn floors with a plop as it relocated itself to the edge of it's pen. Via approached the mule and scratched his muzzle, a neigh of satisfaction coming from the animal. Via chuckled at her pet. The love she had for her animal was beyond any other love she had ever experienced. It gave her the warmth and protective feeling. She wished every person in the District was able to feel the same way, a least one point in their lives.
Via grabbed the harness off of the all. Raisins brayed at the sight of it and she let out another small smile. "C'mon, Raisins, I know you don't like the harness, but you have to wear it!" She opened the stall door and allowed the donkey freedom. It was an eternal struggle for her to place the harness and lead onto the mule. He struggled against it. Even Via couldn't convince the donkey into wearing the harness. Eventually, he gave in to it. He was a stubborn ass, but Via was even more stubborn. A sense of pride flowed in her whenever she won the battle against Raisins and his harness.
The girl shivered at the cold. She couldn't imagine how cold the animal felt right now, but she knew that the enjoyment of walking with his human trumped everything. She lead Raisins out onto the streets of District 10. Despite how common it was to see others out walking their animals outside, the cold didn't often bring too many people out of their homes this time of year. The streets were fairly empty, save for a few stragglers here and there.
The duo made it fifteen minutes before Raisins began acting up and whinnying. "Calm down, Raisins," Via told him, as if he would listen or answer back. He refused to move, despite her owner pulling on the leash. "C'mon, Raisins!" Raisins didn't cooperate, and instead began bucking. Fear ran down Via's spine. He rarely ever bucked. She attempted to calm him down, and prayed that no injuries would come out of the fearless animal.
