Bloody knuckles crack open as he tightens his grip on the knife, swiping his tongue across chapped lips in the midst of the winter. 

"Run, Keevy. Run and don't look back until you can't-" 

"Your father, he killed them..didn't he?"

His friend's throwing knife embeds itself into the tree with a thud, and suddenly he's choking on his heartstrings as his father drops to one knee, sweating and trembling. His eyes are wide and his hands fall to his son's shoulders. They're in the dark here, but there is a banging at the door- louder, louder, until it deafens them. The grandfather clock in the corner is some sort of twisted irony as it counts down their fate. He breathes his soul into his son in those final moments. Kisses on the cheek and hugs, bloodstains on his collar. 

Keevy rubs the handle of the knife between his fingertips, tearing into the silence before speaking. 

"My dad always said a broken man was like a storm at sea. Calm at the best of times, wild and destructive at the worst." 

Limbs snap as he runs, tears streaming down his cheeks as every light he sees turns blurry in his vision, eyes wet with the realization of what he's running from. He's like a fish on land, the way his lungs collapse into each other and the way every street corner feels brand new. It's on his fourth right turn that he hears the bang in the distance and he falls to his knees, tears filling his palms as he presses his hands to his eyes to try and numb the pain, anything to numb the pain. 

"So, what did you do?"

He lets the knife fly, striking true to his target, like years of practice would suggest. 

"I ran."
