Julianna Reekie
"Wake me up
I'm living a nightmare"
I'm living a nightmare"
How could anyone ever get past losing a loved one? she wondered.
Julianna, or as most people called her, Juli, had just recently witnessed the death of her cousin, Rachel Violette, in the Hunger Games. She'd just escaped the bloodbath at the Cornucopia, and went to mourn the death of her fallen ally, when she was jumped by other tributes. These tributes attacked and killed her, to the horror of Juli as she watched on the television screen. She'd always loved her cousin, and even though Rachel had volunteered for the Games, Juli still didn't believe that she had deserved to die, especially like that. It enraged her that someone would do something like that to Rachel.
Shortly following the events of Rachel's murder in the Hunger Games, Juli had shut herself away for a while. She didn't want much of anything to do with anyone, and a lot of people in her family were just as quiet as she was after the fact, not wanting to speak to the others that were around. Juli eventually emerged from her solitary state, though, when it came time for Rachel's funeral. She had dressed in simple clothing, but made sure it was nice enough for a funeral. It was a nice, black dress that had been Rachel's when she was younger. It was passed on to Julianna when Rachel outgrew it. It was one of the few things she still had left of Rachel, so she thought highly of it and held it close in her heart.
When the casket containing Rachel's body was opened to reveal the girl's body, Juli was somewhat surprised. She looked... significantly more peaceful that the young girl had imagined. Her eyes were closed, and her arms crossed over her chest, holding a bouquet of violets. She almost looked beautiful. Almost.
Could a dead person really look beautiful? the young Reekie girl wondered.
As the funeral began, some people walked up to the front where Rachel's body was and said a few words about her. Juli hadn't really been planning on doing so, as she didn't know what to say, but in the moment, she felt like she had to, for some reason. She walked up to the front, and stood next to Rachel's peaceful-looking body in its lifeless yet still beautiful state.
"Rachel was my cousin. You probably all know that, of course, but I was very close to her. It was as if she were a sister to me. It's always hard to lose someone, and many of you likely know that I shut myself away for a while, not wanting to talk to anyone. It was really hard to deal with, and it still is now. I just want to say to Rachel, if she can still hear me, that I love her, I won't forget her, and that even if she did volunteer for the Games, she didn't deserve to die. She should have been the one to come home."
Juli then returned to where she had been in the crowd of people, next to one of her cousins, Rachel's younger brother, Marco. He hugged her tightly and whispered to her.
"I miss her too."
