Maybe it’s his childlike nature that is helping him cope, or maybe he is just not coping at all. He wears a smile every day, he can’t remember the last time his cheeks were tear stained and his nights are filled with sleep. His wife lays awake besides him, while he dreams of better days. He believes himself to be the breadwinner, that is all he can do now, provide for Abandon, Preston and Eva. But he definitely does not fit the stereotypical conventions of a man, he may provide but he could never protect. A naïve damsel in distress is what he is.
He kisses his wife and children goodbye every day before work, to the shop is where he goes and to the shop is where he copes. Days can be slow in the tailor’s shop and so to the backroom he goes, to cope alone. A hidden distillery with sacks of potatoes, he is a provider and the best way to keep his mind on track is to simply mass produce. Measuring up men for uniforms just isn’t sufficient enough. For every six bottles he sells, he keeps one for himself. And that is how he has kept the frown away.
But worries still linger in the air, he worries his wife will leave him. He doubts he is mature enough for her, even after the years they have spent together. He is adamant she is too strong for him. He just wants to find out more about his wife in their moment of grief, so that his mind can finally settle.
