The plan was to intimidate Mr. Young. A little bit of blood, a little bit of flame, and a big payoff. Her cut would be enough to pay rent for that month.
Gunnar hadn't told her that they might actually set the house on fire.
Then again, Gunnar didn't tell her a lot of things. Toni coughed as she stumbled against a wall, squinting through the smoke. Mr. Young hadn't thought they'd hold him there until it was dangerous for them to leave, but it seemed they were full of surprises that night. He'd coughed up the cash eventually, but they'd had to scatter soon after. Xenos had the loot - he had the best eye out of all of them, he'd get it out even in the smoke - and the rest of them were spread out thin, trying to avoid the throng of Peacekeepers that would no doubt be flooding in at any moment.
Through the crackling of the flames, Toni heard something sickeningly familiar not too far ahead of her. The thumping of a cane, a hesitant step hidden to most ears. Gunnar.
"Shit."
Toni didn't remember running. She just remembered leaning against the wall one moment and finding herself behind him the next, stooping beneath his shoulder on his bad side and lurching forward. "We need to leave now."
They made it down the stairs, out the back door, and around the building before Toni spotted the familiar flash of white uniforms. Swearing softly and glancing over her shoulder at the gate around the back yard, she redirected them into the neighbor's shed.
Slipping out from under Gunnar's shoulder, Toni knelt down and peered through the space between two boards. "That fire will keep them around for a couple hours. We'll have to stay here until they're gone."
Because there's no way in hell I'm leaving you behind.
hold on so tight, but i have to let go
it hurts to send you out there on your own
you can't stay here anymore
you've outgrown this place
it hurts to send you out there on your own
you can't stay here anymore
you've outgrown this place

run away heart
don't you ever worry about me
run away my heart
and don't you ever look back
don't you ever worry about me
run away my heart
and don't you ever look back
