The reaping had concluded with the most precious part of his life still in tact; his family. This year, there was a quell twist, but for once, it wasn't one that he feared would harm his daughter. All of the tributes for these Games were to be volunteers, and as many as there were that wanted to step forward, could. Patrick knew Fauna was intelligent enough not to pitch herself into an arena designed to kill her. She was a smart young lady. He held her so dearly that he would have been absolutely devastated to lose her, especially to something as terrible as the yearly Hunger Games.
Patrick had walked his daughter to the reaping that morning, and walked her home afterward. He had promised her that very morning that she would come home safe, and when she did, they would celebrate. Since he was correct about her safety, he didn't break his vow on the promise of a celebration. That night, they would be having a bonfire, as they did after every reaping. Each year, the Hayden family would do this to celebrate their fortunate safety, and other children in the District would be invited over to join them. It was still light out when Patrick arrived home with his daughter, but that at least gave him time for preparations.
"Feel free to relax, sweetheart. Your Poppy is going to get everything ready for tonight," he said to his daughter as he planted a gentle kiss on her forehead. When they entered the house, Patrick greeted his husband, Marcus, with a peck on the lips, followed by a smile.
"I'm going to go take care of the bonfire preparations. You spend some time with Fauna, okay?" he said to his husband. Marcus, however, shook his head no, a slight frown on his face. "Is something wrong?" Patrick inquired.
"I want you to spend time with Fauna. I'll take care of everything, okay? You two are a bit closer than she and I. I love her with all of my heart, of course, but I think she may want to spend her time with her Poppy instead," Marcus expressed. Patrick nodded in agreement.
"Alright. If you're sure you don't want any help, I don't mind at all," the man whose daughter had called him 'Poppy' from a young age replied. 'Poppy' had always been Fauna's nickname for Patrick, and it made him smile whenever she called him that.
As the evening rolled in and the sky began to get dark, Marcus reentered the house and told his husband, as well as his daughter, that the bonfire celebration was ready to get started.
"That sounds good to me!" Patrick exclaimed. Then, he turned to his dear daughter. "Are you ready?" he asked her.
When they headed outside, Marcus started the fire, and it didn't take long for some of the children of the District to start arriving. Some of them Patrick recognized as friends or acquaintances of Fauna's, and others he didn't know. Regardless, he welcomed them all openly, as long as they were kind enough and behaved themselves.
Patrick had seated himself on a log that was set out for seating by the bonfire, and motioned for Fauna to come sit next to him. Marcus was on the other side of the fire, chatting with the parents of a pair of children that had arrived, and the flames licked the air. Blazing brightly, he could feel the heat radiating towards him as it warmed his body. It was a great night for a bonfire, as it was cold enough that the heat felt nice, but not too cold to bear being outdoors. The man had a smile on his face as he watched the children chattering away, eating snacks and overall having fun.
Oh how grateful he was that his daughter was safe another year, and that he was able to have the chance to spend this time with her.
As Patrick sat there, he noticed a girl that he'd never seen before who he supposed was one of the children of the couple Marcus was speaking with, as he could see resemblance between them. The young girl was sitting by herself, and while everyone else was having fun, she seemed to be lonely, or perhaps even upset.
"Fauna?" Patrick piped up. "How about you go say hello to that girl over there. She's by herself, and I bet she could use a friend."
