Snap!

Light travels faster than sound, and Molly paused as she walked, transfixed by the glint of the metallic trap as it snapped shut several feet away. The young girl barely registered the sound itself. The trapping station was sparsely populated, most tributes opting to develop their fighting skills. They were all so predictable, running after the closest spear or sword they could get their greedy little hands on. Some, like her, had already had plenty of experience with weapons, so what was the point of wasting their time training when they’d been doing so their entire lives?

They should have joined her in exploring the place, helped her find the evasive shinies that the Capitol seemed intent on keeping hidden. Instead, they were making the pre-Games time period as boring as she could have imagined.

Perhaps she would have practiced knife throwing more if the lighting had been brighter, but throwing them at dull, dirt-colored dummies in a boring, rust-colored room just made her miss the days when she could walk outside and watch the sun bring life into the gleaming deadly projectiles. It just wasn’t the same.

Glint…

Zap…

Glint, glint, glint!

Zap, zap, zap!

Molly’s eyes trained on the source of the light, a net pulsing brighter than anything else in the room. Even her token, the shiny vial she wore around her neck, paled in comparison. The sounds of swords clashing, trainers yelling, Molly’s own footsteps faded out, replaced by an ever-loudening buzz. The stations, the tributes, the floor beneath her feet all faded to black, as the source of the light grew to encompass her vision.

It was there, right in front of her, just begging to be touched. (It’s… so… beautiful…) All she needed to do was reach out.
