Onyx woke up in a strange mood that day. Something horrible was about to happen and she knew it. It was the Reaping day and she had never been afraid of being picked before like she was that morning.
The day was not really different from the day before and the day before that day. Grey clouds were hanging from the sky like dirty rags and didn't remind Onyx of sugar anymore. Everything was silent, like the sea before a storm. When the family left the house, the girl glanced quickly at her brothers and sisters just to make sure she will remember their faces, no matter what the fate brings them.
When they came to the district square, she lost her family in the crowd and decided to just stand patiently among a few girls of her age and wait until the Reaping is over. She was becoming more and more nervous every minute and her hands became weak and sweaty in a matter of minutes. However, when the time came for the results to be announced, instead of the names the girl thought she would hear, she realized that no one will be reaped. She wondered if anyone was reckless enough to volunteer. The nasty feeling vanished and for the first time in her life Onyx realized that her family was one hundred percent safe on the Reaping day. Her heart was jumping up and down while she was searching the crowd for her siblings. She noticed Bruce's face in the crowd and smiled at him. Maroon was standing not far from her and grinnning widely from under her long black eyelashes. There were five more to find. A few people were volunteering one after another, but Onyx didn't think anybody in her family would do the same. Life was perfect.
Suddenly she heard a voice coming from the other side of the crowd: "I volunteer!" The sound of it was strangely familiar and when Onyx took a look at the person who volunteered, a chill ran down her spine. She couldn't believe her eyes, it just couldn't be Ave. If this was a normal kind of Reaping, Onyx could volunteer to take her sister's place, but now she could do nothing.
When the family came to see Ave, Onyx struggled to put herself together, but she couldn't manage it. Why did her sister choose to do this? Why would she want to leave her family like this? Was it because of something she did or said? A tear ran down her cheek and she tried to wipe it before anyone noticed. She had to be calm and strong, she had to help her family get over this.
However, when she looked in her sister's eyes, she couldn't understand what was going on anymore. She hugged her as tight as she could and hid her face in Ave's shoulder.
"Why are you doing this, Ave?"
