Molly Malachite | 14 | D1F
Shine bright like a diamond
The Capitol and its creations were no diamonds, nothing but fool’s gold – drawing in the unsuspecting innocents with their shine.Molly had fallen victim to its falsities, a promise of glory. She thought she would be the one to drive back the darkness, coming in swinging in her glittering gold skirt. How wrong she had been. From the beginning, the light had kept itself just out of her reach. Prove yourself, or fall to darkness, it seemed to taunt her.
It was a carrot, tangled in front of her by fate, as Molly struggled on, always trying to get control of it. As Molly struck out with her staff, shattering another tribute’s legs, she felt the light drawing nearer, almost within her grasp. But as she reached out to wrest control from the dark forces around her, her skin opened up with new wounds, pushing her away from her goal. Molly looked into the eyes of her attacker, a girl who was only a little older than she was. She wanted to fault her, but she couldn’t. The girl was just as much a victim of the darkness’s manipulation as Molly herself was. The girl's ally was the same. Of the three, none had willingly decided to be servants of darkness. They must have had motivations as pure as Molly’s. But their environment had molded them, stripped them of their abilities to discern between right and wrong. The girl without feelings turned to Molly, leaning on her ally for support.
This is the end…
Hold your breath and count to 10.
1 – She approached.2 – She pulled her weapon back.
3 – The darkness in the girl’s eyes grew.
4 – She lunged.
5 – The weapon made contact.
6 – The weapon withdrew.
7 – Dark, thick blood oozed from the wound as the whole world faded to black.
8 – Light. The world was spinning. Molly felt herself moving, but her muscles were devoid of strength. Salome (Dear Salome…) was dragging her (Where are we going?). The battle was either over, or the blood loss was affecting Molly’s hearing. The only sounds around were those of two dainty feet plopping into puddle after puddle and an omnipresent scraping, her back and Larry’s against the cold ground below. Head tilted to the side, she saw the sky tainted silver, gold and red. It wasn’t the real sky, she realized, but its reflection in the puddles around her. Her skin, now free of body paint, looked as pale as the white crayons the Gamemakers had provided. “I’m fading,” she cried, sadly. A single tear, translucent when it left her eye, but golden upon contact with the ground, rolled down her cheek, mixing with the pool beneath her. Slowly, Molly’s eyes closed once more. (Will I ever open them again?)
9 – Salome’s face was the first thing Molly saw. Sad eyes, furrowed brows, a smile as upside-down as everything else in the arena. (She knows I won’t make it.) The older girl was mumbling something under her breath - words of departure, Molly realized with a heavy sigh. The farewell reached Molly’s ears, and the girl had a feeling she was not the only one to ever hear the words. They were too deep, too valuable to be only used once. "The stars give us light in the darkness. They’re light from long ago—a reminder of our past, and see us through to the morning sun, our future." There would be no morning sun for Molly, but perhaps another light awaited her. Molly’s lips parted, as she forced out the words which were sure to be her last. “Salome…” she said, pointing at the vial of glitter around her neck, “My shinies…” Eyes pleading, she whimpered, “Save me from the darkness.” Salome, understanding as she was, figured out what Molly meant. Silently, she reached around her neck, removing the token from around Molly’s neck. She uncapped the container, letting the first of the sparkles fall. A weak smile on her face, Molly used the last of her strength to wish her ally well. “You are the light in this arena, Salome. Drive back the darkness… by bringing the crown home.” The Izar girl just looked on sadly, sprinkling the glitter higher and higher up Molly’s body, until she reached the dying girl's eyes. As the twin portals into the world of light closed for the last time, Salome filled the brows, lids and lashes with the remnants of Molly’s light. The last words the young girl heard were a soft, "I'm sorry I couldn't do more. I'll see you on the other side someday, Molly." (Take your time.) And as Molly's ears started to RING! RING! RING!, she exploded into a million sparkles.
10 – The world was so bright, a never-ending maze of mirrors. Molly walked the well-lit hallways she now found herself in, marveling at the bright images in front of her. No matter where she looked, endless copies of herself stretched onward, surrounded by a glowing ring of light. Here, she was pure, her body rid of cuts, her soul unburdened. She had just reached this place, yet Molly had been there forever.
As she walked through the endless corridors, Molly noticed certain reflections changing form, showing scenes that differed from her current state. In one, she was but a babe, no more than several months old, lying in a crib and staring at a mobile above her head with widened eyes. The contraption was filled with an assortment of multi-colored gems, none of them real, but all dazzling nonetheless.
Another mirror showed her first time in training, standing in an outdoor area with a persistent trainer at her side. He seemed angry at the young girl, who refused to put any of the weapons to use, opting instead to watch the light dance along their metallic edges. Molly watched as her younger self was finally convinced to throw a knife after seeing the man do so himself. Light, she’d learned that day, was even more beautiful when it was seen in flight.
Wandering on, reliving her life through the memories projected onto the surfaces around her, Molly continued to experience the times in her life when she’d learned to love the light’s shinies. Eventually, however, she found a mirror unlike the rest, a darkened one, which cast shade onto the otherwise lit location. The scene was simple, a twelve-year-old Molly in bed at night. The room was dark, not a light to be found. Molly watched her past self get up cautiously, hugging herself as she crept towards the opposite side of her room. A single hand reached out, and Molly heard a switch flip. Light flooded the room as a single diamond nightlight illuminated the whole area.
Feelings of safety and home taking over, Molly reached out to touch the light, but the moment her hand made contact with the surface, the mirror turned black with a sudden Crack! The surface was no longer bright, but a fragmented black screen. Crack! Crack! The mirrors around her began to dim, one by one, shattering and swallowing the light around Molly.
Crack! Crack! Crack! Crack! The noise was overwhelming, but the speed with which darkness took over even more so. Before long, Molly was alone and surrounded by pitch black darkness. (I’m in a nightmare, but there’s no waking up.) So this was death, she realized. A lonesome existence, without any light, preceded by one last taunt. The shinies she’d searched for her whole life, the light to keep back the darkness – had they really all been for naught? Was darkness always destined to win, to consume all else?
"The stars give us light in the darkness.” The last words she’d heard came back to Molly now. It seemed like that had been so long ago, yet the sound of Salome’s voice was fresh in her memory. (Where are the stars here?) Even as the thought crossed her mind, Molly saw specks of light appear on her own body. Her shinies, sprinkled on her body during her last moments, were sparkling, bringing light into the void. The light grew brighter, and though around her was darkness, Molly herself was no longer in the dark.
How much time she spent like that Molly did not know. Eventually though, another speck of light appeared in the darkness, shining brightly far away. No matter what she did, the distance between the two did not change, but eventually, they were joined by a third light, and a fourth. On and on, they appeared, populating the space around her, eventually numbering in the hundreds. Whether they were souls like hers or something else entirely, whether they had come into being after her or if she had simply been blind to their existence until now, whether they would stay there forever or one day fade away, Molly did not know nor care. What mattered was that they brought balance to the darkness, keeping it at bay. From then on and for all eternity, she would stay at their side and shine on alongside them.
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky
