Day Three Anthem

You're all mad here.

Yesterday you might have been convinced it was a trick of the light, but today you're absolutely certain that the faces of the dead up in the sky are being formed by sea creatures who spend the day playing amongst the clouds. Synchronized fliers, sharks and seahorses join forces with electric eels and octopuses in memory of children who may not have been loved enough to live, but whose memory will survive within the same souls that stole their last breath. It is a cycle that doesn't feel as if it will ever end. One body becomes an eye, another a long lost smile, and so they continue on and on, both above and within.

What truly causes you to do a double take is something which at first seems to be applause following the anthem. It's not so much the idea that someone in this arena could be glad for the deaths of others — in the quiet, you have to admit you're relieved that each canon has yet to be your own — rather that it is growing. A hushed rhythm rises with the sun, panicked thunder lost from its storm. Across the Paper Plains the dream-beasts which usually wander in peaceful oblivion have been stirred into a frenzy. Spider Elephants stampede beyond their kingdom and into the treetops of the Phosphorescent Orchard, Coral Moose weaving a hysterical pattern of terror through their ankles. Even the fish are frightened, unable to check on their children they thought had been left with a safe protector. The sky quakes. One aurora becomes another as a swarm of Nakom nesting in the trees is roused all at once and the sunrise becomes kaleidoscopic wildfire. Thousands upon thousands of danger-bright butterflies flee the madness and head for the safety of the mansion. The walls may protect them, but today they certainly won't protect you.
