After lightning struck and thunder rolled, there came a silence Fallon hated more than anything else.
In the stillness she could hear her own breathing, ragged and clawing against the texture of her ribcage until her lungs were rubbed raw. She could hear her stuttering steps mixing with Tamron’s clumsy hopping, the beat sloppy and random. Her heart was pounding and no matter what she did, she couldn’t seem to stop crying.
"Fallon. Fallon. I have to slow down. I can't, can't keep hopping like this." She welcomed the way Tamron’s voice cut through the silence. Her steps slowed to a halt, breaths gasping in and out. Tamron shifted more of his weight onto her as he recovered and she braced herself against him, closing her eyes and memorizing the way it felt to have a living, breathing human being so close. "I'm so sorry, Fallon."
His apology only made the tears come faster. Without exhaustion coursing through her reality crashed upon her, and she hunched over, spine spasming with ugly sobs. All she could see was Lightning disappearing behind them, the dust stirred up by impossibly long legs hiding him from view. "I - I'm sorry. I should have - have gone back. It should have been me, I'm the broken one."
The weight on her lightened slightly as Tamron’s arms wrapped about her trembling form, tugging her closer to him. She buried her face in his chest for a moment, hiding from a world that had suddenly decided to take everything from her. "No, don't - don't put this on yourself. Fallon, Lightning and I were on the same page about this. We want you to make it home." She felt his sigh and worshipped it. It meant he was still breathing. "He shouldn't have pushed me. We only just saw him again."
We want you to make it home. Fallon peeled herself away slightly and sucked in a shuddering breath, swallowing down the tears and forcing her voice to steady. All she could see was an empty room that was supposed to fill itself with Mama and her siblings but never did. "Tam, I don't... I don't think they want me at home." She paused, biting her lower lip so hard it bled, but she did not cry again. In her mind’s eye she saw Mama, and then Lightning. "They didn't even come to say goodbye. Everyone leaves and I n-never - never get to s-say goodbye.”
Tamron’s grip on her tightened. "I made my promise, Fallon. With every fiber of my being, I won't leave you unless I can't help it." His expression changed as he glanced over his shoulder. Fallon cringed. "Do you, do you think they picked him up already?"
Fallon didn’t want to talk about Lightning. She didn’t want to talk about his final moment of heroism and sacrifice, or his mangled body, or the way his district would react when he came home in a box. But Tamron obviously hadn’t seen what she had, and he deserved to know the truth. "He was lightning, Tam. I didn't believe him when he told me but then I saw him shoot across the sky." His soul, shooting right up to the stars. She sniffled. "Whatever's left back there... it's not him. I don't want to see it."
Tamron offered her a not-quite smile. "Did he really? I wouldn't be surprised with the likes of him." Fallon’s heart ached even more when his smile faded slightly. "You're right, let's remember for who he was. And he's with Chaos now. That's what really matters."
She didn’t want to talk about remembering Lightning or what mattered. Her eyes swept around the glowing world that surrounded them. "I don't like it here, Tam,” she admitted after a moment. “I can't tell what other people can see and what they can't, and the ground won't stop shaking. I just... I don't want to be here anymore."
"That's why we're going to make sure you leave. Fallon, you're going to leave this place and be safe finally." Tamron embraced her again. "And I'll be right beside you."
That’s a lie. Fallon didn’t say it out loud because she was sure Tamron thought she didn’t know, but she wasn’t stupid. She knew how the Games worked. If she made it out, Tamron would not be beside her. His blood would be on her hands, and she didn’t want that. It hurt too much to think about. "No one's safe. I'm broken, but I know that. No one wins the Games." So why had she volunteered? She’d thought this was a safer alternative to the hell she went through every night, but now she was starting to doubt herself. "The real-life-monsters leave survivors, but they don't leave winners. Not really."
Tamron let go of her when she finally stopped trembling. Her rose knife had melted sometime while they’d been running, and she knew she’d need a new weapon if they were going to make it another day. She’d heard the cannons. And while Tamron claimed he wanted to get her out alive, Fallon’s focus was protecting him. She would be his knight.
Pulling out her last crayon, a stunning indigo color, Fallon began sketching out a series of blades. Instead of hilts, she allowed the opposite end of each knife fan out into a single wing, feathers spreading as if being lifted by a breeze. Impractical, just like the rose, but the wings reminded her of the escape she was so desperately craving. And sketching out the individual feathers helped her relax.
She hadn’t been able to save Lightning, but she wouldn’t make that same mistake again. She refused to lose anyone else.
It was her turn to sacrifice.
