[attr="class","craig"]He doesn't know if the clenching in his stomach is from fear or excitement, but the shaking in his hands needed to settle before he stepped out on stage or everyone would think him just a scared child with no real idea of what was going on. He knew as well as anyone here how things were. "Like many of us, I was not born into District thirteen. Some of us here have lived in this underground system of tunnels and corridors, growing up away from the sun and the Capitol. Everyone who is here has traded the freedom to walk outside without fear for the freedom of living without threat of dying for no greater reason that the whim of the President. I made this choice, but I didn't make it alone. I was once drafted into an experiment located in District six. Having been told that this research would help those going into the arena, and those who suffer outside of it, I agreed readily. It wasn't until I arrived that I began to question the legitimacy of this. I met fellow assistants and scientists, and I met those who had volunteered to be the subjects. This was where I met Lindy." The light in his eyes flared for a moment with remembered joy, but then quickly darkened with the shadows of the things that had come later. From the beginning she had stuck in his mind, and quickly she had become important to him. He would have given anything to have protected her from the future he had brought on her. "Lindy confirmed my fears, and it was only thanks to the disappearance of the lead scientist that no one had suffered irreversibly. I vowed then to help Lindy, for I had quickly fallen in love. We spent months sending letters between District nine where I lived and District eleven where she resided, recruiting any wanderers we might find in helping with this effort. Eventually I came to the decision to go to District eleven and to bring Lindy to District nine. By the time we had arrived back at my home in District nine I had known there was no way we could stay within Panem. Already we had had a number of close encounters, and it was purely luck that we had made it this long. Now, we only had to prepare for the final leg of our journey - to come here and to join the resistance that is District thirteen. On our journey here we were spotted by a patrol of Peacekeepers in the woods and chased. We thought perhaps if we ran fast enough we might escape them, and we nearly had. Then Lindy was pulled from my grasp by a Peacekeeper. She screamed for me to keep running, that she loved me, that she would be fine. Go, she said, go and get safe." He tried not to let his voice break or let himself choke but the memory was still so strong, and he still felt so helpless. He had let her down then, and he never really forgave himself for it. The determination to try and make things right was what brought him here. He would do this for Lindy, for his mother, for all those who were suffering. "I arrived here, weary and broken. For the past years I have engaged in the community and learned some of the stories of those who live here. I have applied my limited knowledge of mechanics, medicine, and production to help were I can. Now, I believe I can help in another way. Here in District thirteen we are the last hope of the districts. We are the place they flee to when they have nowhere else to go. We are the place that has slowly been building ourselves up and preparing for the war we know must come. I want to make this place stronger, to gather ourselves and ready us for what is ahead. I want there to be a time when we, as well as Panem, can walk in the sun without fear, can live without fear. We are the first step to that freedom, we are the ones who can bring about this change." He tried to gather them all with his eyes, tried to bring them all into what he was saying. He had to show them he was doing more than simply saying the words - he fully believed them. "Together, we can walk in the sun once more." |
