A bundle of cue cards all vigorously rehearsed and memorised but he can’t trust himself. He doesn’t want to enter a realm of silence as the hundreds and thousands look up at him. You are just going to have to use them.
”Pierre Hope.”
It’s his turn and the nerves have already begun a siege in his body. He flexes his fingers, trying to tackle the shakes that are creeping up his limbs.
With the cue cards in sight, he begins; he stands at the podium in the centre of the stage, his vision mainly on the people looking to him.
”You all probably know my name. Three of my own girls have succumbed to the games but I am not here to talk about my own personal tragedies. My surname could so easily be used in this campaign ‘hope.’ Hope, it means yearning for something to happen, like a desire, a wish…a dream. I could use the word in my campaign trail and have it on my slogan but wishing for something and doing something are totally different things.
I know your opinions on politicians, because I have thought the same myself, whenever I have been a part of the crowd, looking up to… as you say idiot, rambling on stage. They are usually all talk and no action, delivering false promises for a better future and change. But I have pledged to never lie, I pledge to do what I promise, I pledge to make sure that Eight does it right.
We have recently been blessed with a victor, after having many dormant years without one and with it has come a great fortune from the Capitol. Many of you may relish in this great gift but many of you may not even see it. Whatever this District earns, I promise to share it evenly to you all because you all deserve it.
My pledge to you is to create a minimum wage and every employer must abide by it. Depending on your level of work, you will get a wage that matches because you deserve a better standard of living, if you are working hard! This pledge will allow you citizens to gain access to better quality food, shelter and everything else that so many take for granted. I am here to make sure that the standard of living is improved in this District; I will make sure that Eight does it right!
I want to improve our future generation’s chance of living in a better world and by doing so, I am going to create new and improved educational curriculum that every school in the District must follow. I shall reserve funds for resources for the schools and I shall create a scheme to encourage children to go to school, rather than being sent to the factories.
I am a family man and I want to improve the quality of living for the hundreds of families that live in this District. I own my a tailoring shop, I am honest and hardworking, I am just like every citizen in this District. We are Eight, we are family and we need to make sure we do it right.
All we have to do is be a confident community, by working together; we will succeed to be the greatest!
I accept that the task will be hard but I am committed to ensure that Eight does it right!”
