[attr="class","rolex"]He wasn't much for public speaking but if he was to continue on this path then he would have to improve. The speech he had scribbled down had taken days to write yet even now he felt like he would stumble and stutter the whole way through. Taking a breath to steady himself like he did before a match, he stepped forward and prepared to do battle with his own nerves. "We are the richest district. We are made up of careers who are trained for years in the ways of defense and death. We have had four incredible victors triumph since I was born, the latest only two years ago. Even so, we have been beaten out by lower districts time and time again." His shaking voice had settled into a steadier tone and the jitters were being harnessed as a source of energy. They might be the only thing that enabled him to make it all the way through this speech. "As both someone who trained rigorously, and then went on to help train future prospects, I know the level of excellence required of trainees. I'm here to say it's not enough. The lowest bar is too low, and are a greater challenge to limbo under than step over. We need to give our children the drive to go for gold, reach for the stars, to be better than the person standing next to them. The guidance of my trainers and my striving to be better gave me the ability to go on and win medals at the Olympics. I have two bronze and a gold to my name, something I want more people of this district to be able to claim. The same skills that are needed to win medals are the ones that will keep our children alive in the arena. By building on these, we will make a stronger district." The determination he had felt and the sheer desperation to amount to something showed in his words. He used these to impress his honesty upon those listening; he truly believed in what he was saying. "This does not mean someone's value is gone once they turn nineteen. The opposite, in fact, for now they will remain to strengthen the district. I propose classes to help translate learned skills into the working world, and there will forever be a need for more trainers. In my own life there was a time where I was unsure of who I now was and what I could do. I want to stop anyone else from feeling this way. There is a place in this district for everyone, and I want to make sure everyone knows that in their hearts as well as their heads." The thought that he might help someone to have a purpose was a huge part of why he had pushed himself to this point. Once more, he strove to be someone in this district. If he couldn't throw himself into the games to prove his strength then he would have to find another way to stake his claim. Becoming mayor would be a way that he might finally prove his value to his parents. "The opportunities to offer oneself to a purpose and have something to do will help to reduce gang activity in the district. If their time is taken up by doing something productive, then these kids - and some of those who are not so young - will have less time to take part in the activities that disrupt our district. I still hold memories of the gang wars that occurred those years ago; I don't want something like that to happen again." Memories of Emery, the graffiti and blood and broken windows, the intense fear and excitement, assaulted him so that he had to pause to focus on breathing. He wanted to shake his head to clear it, but wasn't sure what kind of message that would send. Instead, he took a breath and closed his eyes for a moment before opening them again. As his eyelids rose they wiped away the memories - at least for now. "I want to bring more order and discipline to the district, and to emphasize that each person has a purpose. I want to oil the machine that district one and have it run smoother than it has in a long time. With work, time, and dedication, we can assure our place as the best district." The corner of his mouth crooked up in a wry smile, "we are number One, after all." |
