Three others, which one could he beat in a fight? None, he wasn’t a fighter. Pierre never thought of this, really, was kissing babies foreheads and not having a reaction, not enough? A Rasoio, Oriana and Ashcroft Roosevelt; it was obvious really, the one he would have to face. Similar policies, similar background, both of them fathers; a debate between dads, how exciting for the District.
Blessed with a day of sunshine, Pierre suggested to the officials that they hold the debate outside. Stuck inside a room with clammy bodies, is not how he intends to spend his morning, even if it’s in the presence of Mr Roosevelt.
Rave reviews fill the columns in the papers, all about his speech and now, instead of people greeting him with a simple hello, it is always a congratulations Pierre! Many would soak in all the fame and praise but all Pierre can do is question why? From day one, there has been no thought put into anything, his success has been formed from spontaneous acts. Signing up to it all was so spontaneous. No consulting to his wife, weeks after the death of his eldest living daughter, he really didn’t even consult with himself about it. Right now, he is just travelling along in this shot of fame for it is likely to disperse at the end of it, he may be winning now but doubt claims that he won’t be the one getting the keys to the big house.
Rather than holding it on the Justice Building’s stage, the District officials have set up an area in the heart of the square, so that the candidates can be on the same level of the audience.
Pierre is escorted to his position and when he makes eye contact with Roosevelt, he gives a nod in greeting.
No matter how many cue cards his aides have organized for him, he doesn’t feel prepared. It feels as though he will be debating in a mirror, this man feels more like a friend than a challenger.
A woman introduces Pierre and his contestant and the spotlight is suddenly turned to his direction. A large audience and the cameras glare up at him, it all so unnerving. Who hits first?
Without a glance to Roosevelt’s direction, his focus is on the faces in front of him and beyond the cameras. ”Me and Mr Roosevelt over there , we are both family men and well, my stance on changing the educational system within the District is going to be the policy that betters the next generation. A better education will ensure that the children of tomorrow are able to develop the industry in Eight and it will ultimately better their lives.” How does one even begin a debate?
