Training was a monotonous exercise that wasn’t designed for tributes like Hero Marvray. Despite his father’s apparent doubt about his odds for survival, the boy knew he would have to find a way to impress the Gamemakers before his private training session, or else he’d be toast. His time spent in the training room with the other tributes wasn’t about honing his skills, but about making sure he brought attention to himself whenever the Gamemakers looked on. Truthfully, he didn’t like having their eyes on him. If he could have it his way, he’d fuck right off and sit on his ass during all the training sessions. Unfortunately, his survival would depend on more than brute force and a bitter attitude.
It was exhausting, pretending to be someone who cared what other people think. Hero didn’t think he’d make a habit of it.
Then again, there probably wasn’t much time left for building habits, anyway.
Sulking into the dining hall, Hero plopped one of everything on his plate and looked around the room, imagining what he would say to Villain if the boy were at his side. They’d probably make fun of the Capitol’s outlandishness and pretend to complain about the quality of the food - anything, really, to take the sting away from the glaringly obvious reality of the situation.
Unfortunately for Hero, he might never see his best friend again, so these conversations could only take place inside his own head.
The loneliness that permeated his every thought drove him to sit down next to a brown-haired boy with a friendly face. It wasn’t something Hero would usually do, what with his bad attitude and all, but he reasoned that he had to sit somewhere to eat his lunch, and he could get a better idea of who he was up against.
“Hi,” he began, putting on a confident, charismatic smile. “I’m Hero, District Four.”
