Another day, another glass of bourbon for breakfast.

Oh, and tributes.

His escort’s voice was like a buzzing insect in his ear. ”Do this, do that, try this on, no you can’t eat that, what are you doing?” Endless nagging and questioning about his strategies of survival. The bitch was clueless, because his time spent in this glorious palace would not be spent strategizing. He didn’t care about that shit yet, he was trying to relax. The Capitol had all of these resources and spoils for them, why not take advantage of it? All of these tributes were going to die. They should spend their time wisely too.

He ignored the incessant whining and walked out of his quarters, already tipsy. His floor was closest to the main stage, so he shuffled down the stairs and into the dining hall. Breakfast was served; a thousand pastries and fruit baskets for everyone to savor. He plucked an apple from a basket and marched into the training center. He had slept in a bit, to his escort’s dismay, so the training center was already bustling. Desperate tributes scrambling to learn survival skills at the last minute. Unfortunately for them, amateurs stay amateurs for the most part. Their efforts would lead them down the same path to darkness.

He took a bite of his apple and surveyed the room. The dummies were heavily occupied, though he didn’t trust half the tributes here to hold a sword properly. The plant station was definitely out of the question. He could hunt, why would he need to know that shit?

His eyes fell upon in the fire station. Piles of firewood and trees to climb – one in particular had a boy’s legs wrapped around it. Upon closer inspection, it seemed as if he was trying to make his way to the top, but the technique was all wrong. His ass was out and his hips were gyrating. What the fuck was he doing?

”You know that’s not a pole, right?” He laughed because stripper jokes were always funny. ”I am enjoying the view though, so please continue.”

I can't get over how fucked up the wall in my bedroom is.

It's the square in nine, people walking to wherever the hell they go. I watch for a moment, eyes searching.

It's a giant pile of water, like really big. Waves of it crash against the wall of my room and for a moment I'm mesmerized. I look down at my hands, wondering if they're wet.

It's a bunch of those tall things with the fucking needles and the rough skin.

I've seen them outside the fences in nine but because we've never had any use for them, they've never really been allowed to creep in. Our firewood comes from seven, so do our building materials. I wonder if you can climb them.

I wander out of my room, too early. I couldn't sleep well until I moved to the floor because the bed was too soft. When your usual bed is a sleeping bag on cement though, anything's too soft. Even when Mason lets me sleep on his couch sometimes, I never sleep well. I don't leace though, I like being near him. I liked it.

I have no doubts that it won't eve happen again and the sound of his fan turning in the summer, windows wide open and the feeling of the broken springs underneath me are gone now. I have no misconceptions.

I've always been an idiot, but never really that stupid.

There's no one in the training center when I get there and I make a beeline for the fire-making station, trees climbing high into the air. I wonder if thery're real trees or not. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

I make my way over to the closest one and wrap my fingers around as wide as they will go but the tree is still too wide. When I think about it, I know that they're just really tall flowers except no petals and just branches. Wildflowers used to grow between the cracks in the pavement in the slums in nine.

I wiggle up experimentally and find myself sliding back down until I press my knees against the truk of the tree. I wiggle up slowly, trying to figure out how exactly a person climbs these things. It takes me nearly ten minutes to gain a foot but at least I'm making progress.

”You know that’s not a pole, right?”

The voice comes from behind, very close and I let go, losing all the height I've gained. I fall backwards, scrambling to get a grip before I fall right into the speaker.

"Make a good impression, get allies."

I guess my ass is about to make an impression on this poor dude's face.

"Fuck me," I whine in annoyance.

He must’ve startled the poor angel. He lost his wings and plummeted toward gravity, and Kaiser happened to be the center of that gravity. Reaching out, he caught the stranger underneath his slender arms and planted himself firmly against the floor. He saved the poor thing from busting his ass.

”Fuck me.”

He laughed. They had a similar thought process, apparently.

”I can do that,” he said, lowering him to the ground. Hands lingered by cutely-shaped hips. His first impression: very positive. He wanted to feel that body against him a second time. All in good time.

He stepped back and glanced up at the tree. Not too high, but definitely thicker than usual. He could understand how an amateur might mess up the technique. Climbing trees, huh. Definitely important for stealth and safety, but he could think of other things for this tribute to climb. And that was not the bourbon talking.

”Also, I can show you how to climb a tree properly. If you’re interested.”

Nobody could ever say he wasn’t considerate.

My heart's slid right up into the back of my throat and it takes a full ten seconds for it to start beating again.

I've fallen plenty of times, like two years ago when Teddy wasn't always dying, only like, fifty percent always dying, we ran together. He was always good at the climbing part, I was good at the fast part. Teddy's heart didn't allow for fast. Mine never really allowed for heights.

"I can do that."

Warmth fills my face as my feet find purchase on the ground and I turn around to address my saviour. It takes me a second and a glance up to realize that I'm looking right at the chest of tribute extraordinaire, Kaiser Fray. He's a career, some psycho who literally runs around his entire life hoping to be reaped. I've heard about them of course, everyone has. Sometimes we even see one on their victory tour after they've killed, y'know, everyone.

I refuse to drop my gaze, staring right at the dude, arms crossed. I pretend I'm as badass as Teva, at least I'm nearly as stupid, according to some other gang members. So I'm half there. The blush remains, despite my annoyance with it. After everything, I'm still a virgin and I know what I like because I know what's good to think of when I'm alone, but I've got no experience.

"Also, I can show you how to climb a tree properly. If you’re interested.”

Surprise hits me at that, a career offering to help anyone isn't expected. We've all seen the cruelty they can exhibit more than enough. The blush deepens and I gesture at the tree.

"Yeah please....it's my first time, so I don't really know what the hell I'm doing."
