EMBERLY
"WHEN WE WERE YOUNGER WE THOUGHT EVERYONE WAS ON OUR SIDE, THEN WE GREW A LITTLE"
I had been weaving the beginnings of another flower crown at the plants station. Perhaps it was a waste of time — but it was comforting. It reminds me of home; the only place I want to be right now. Not here in this room in the tribute center of the Capitol.
My stylist had been experimenting with makeup earlier. "I'm just getting you ready for your interview; I'm still not sure about the look I want to go for." But any look would have been better than the ones she had tried on me — first it was too dark, and next it was obnoxiously bright neon pink.
Saffron had brought my sisters and I makeup before, so I knew the basics on how to use it. But the simple, natural-looking makeup that I would wear was nothing compared to the Capitol's style.
I was silently thanking Ripred, if such an entity existed, that I was able to run off before she could finish the third look. "I need to go to the training room," I told her. "Considering my life is riding on what I learn so — bye!"
Despite the makeup not being as heavy as before — it was only lipstick, foundation, lashes, and eyeliner — it was still uncomfortable to sit in for a long time, and I found myself wishing that I had washed it off before I came here.
Everyone else in the training center seemed to be minding their own business. For a few moments, I took a pause to watch some of the Careers at the station next to mine. Kaiser Fray is one of them — he is a large, muscular boy who looks like he could snap me like a twig. He certainly lives up to the gossip I've heard about him — "The District One male? He's another beautiful Fray boy; Victor material right there, if you ask me."
I shrugged away the thought, not wanting to think about who will die and who will live, and continued to look down at the beginning of a crown in my hands.
