Name: Siren Anrum
Age: 16
Gender: Female
District/Area: District 4
Appearance:
With long, curly,
golden hair, bright green eyes, a tan complexion, delicate features, and a
heart shaped face, many would call Siren very attractive, but she never thought
so, all she could see where the scars of past abuse and of her own
accidents. Her almond eyes reflected an
unknown fear and sorrow into the world and the dark circles and bags underneath
them describe many restless nights. Her
smile seemed just a tad too wide, almost psychotic, as if it pained her to make
a happy expression, but she wore it anyway.
Her teeth were unnaturally white, as if they’d just been bleached, though
everyone knew she was too poor to afford that work done. Any acne she donned blended with the freckles
on her face so well, most would call her skin perfect. But when she wasn’t fighting off her own
fears, she was always picking and scratching at the almost invisible bumps,
causing herself to bleed in her trance of thought.
She
also has a tall frame, with a semi-hourglass build, making her the envy of the
more popular girls in her class, but she always saw her 5’10” height as a
disadvantage, it just made her a bigger target, and her weight of 140 lbs did
her no favors either. Her fingers are
long and her nails are chewed to stubs due to her nervous habits. Her neck is long, usually covered in bruises
as is the rest of her body, but no one ever questioned it, deeming it either
too embarrassing to bring up or just the right fuel for the rumor mill. Her limbs are long and slim, her legs seem
far too long for her torso and her arms seem far too thin for any physical work
by a fisherman’s standard, but she surprisingly makes due, thinking on her feet
and setting her quick hands to work her way around any problems that may come
up in a port and out on the sea, making her one of the youngest successful
fishermen in district 4.
Siren
is also known not only for her lovely looks, but her beautiful voice as well,
making her truly live up to her name.
She was able to throw her voice too, a skill she found came in handy
when she wanted people to believe she was right behind them or for a quick joke. Her mother had a passion for music that
almost no one else in the district seemed to share, so she shared it with her
daughter before leaving with another man.
Siren often used her singing to calm herself down, or to comfort another
person in pain, as accidents on the pier were more common than anyone cared to
mention. Singing while she worked and
around the home was commonplace for her until her mother left, and her father
forbid it, as it reminded him too much of the woman he loved and lost.
Personality:
Siren is a
mystery to most when it comes to her personality. She never truly seems to care about anyone,
as if her getting attached will somehow make her more likely to hurt them. She never used to be like this either, it
just started happening when she was old enough to be in the reaping. Anyone who used to be her friend will tell
you a completely different story than the last, some will say she was super
sweet and kind, almost too trusting, others say that she would rip your throat
out if given the chance, some say talkative, others reserved, but they all
agreed that she had an intimidating mind, a beautiful voice, and that they
liked that she was the way they remembered her.
Siren knew of her morphing personality long before anyone else did, but
she never thought it would do anyone any harm.
Unknown to her, people began calling her fake, and began to try to set
her up for failure. She always saw the
betrayals coming, though often times she walked into those situations because
she thought she deserved the humiliation and strife.
Siren now has
very few friends, but they are her saving grace, the only ones she can confide
in, and the only ones that knows what she fears. Herself.
No one knows for sure what caused this fear, but they have a few
theories that it has something to do with her alcoholic father and her mother
abandoning her, but they all feel as if that’s wrong somehow. She only talks about them with love, and it
seems as if she has blocked out her father’s words and actions from when he was
drunk, opting instead to take care of and provide for the man who has abused
her. What they do know is that she can
take care of herself, she notices anything that seems awry, and that her thoughts
and actions will take her far in life, if she only lets herself and stops her
fear.
History:
Siren was
born into a semi-wealthy family of fishermen.
Her mother was known for her beauty and strong mind, her father was
known for his rowdiness and almost jovial personality. Her mother and father raised her to be a
strong swimmer and fighter, knowing the possibility of her being reaped to be
too great. When she wasn’t being taught
to fight, her mother was teaching her how to sing and read music, and her
father taught her how to fish, make nets, and haggle at the local market. As she grew she only became better at
fighting, pinning her dad several times (though she believes that he let her
win), swimming (beating her friends in many a race), a skilled vocalist, a
great fisher, and an even better haggler, especially at the age of 9.
Things
seemed to be going rather well in her young mind, until her mother decided to
run off with another man, leaving nothing but a note, and her 9-year-old
daughter. Her father’s reputation was
ruined, no one would buy fish from him or Siren except out of pity, and it was
either twice as difficult to haggle prices down or everything was just given to
them. A few weeks after her mother left,
her father turned to the drink. Siren
didn’t see him again for several nights, he even missed her 10th
birthday. He eventually turned up one
morning on the couch of their house, reeking of alcohol and too drunk to wake
up. Siren felt relief that her father
was alright, but weary about what his sudden infatuation with the drink would
mean for her. As it turns out, less
attention and a lot more abuse.
2 years of
abuse later and Siren is finally of age to be considered for the reaping. As she lays her head down the night of her
birthday she experiences a terrible nightmare of her being in the Hunger Games,
where she dies shortly after stepping off of the platform. She wakes with a cry, and doesn’t get any
more sleep that night. The nightmares
continue, slowly at first, seeming to wax and wane with every mention of the
Hunger Games. Eventually the nightmares
become more frequent, more vivid, and start to show more of a ruthlessness
within her. She always wakes when she
dies, and eventually is able to coax herself back to sleep from the sheer
monotony of having the visions every night.
One night she actually wins the Games happening in her mind, and this
scared her more than dying ever did, and she slept no more that night.
When the
nightmares first occurred, Siren tried to forget about what she had seen by
talking and making new friends, hoping to drown the memory with good ones. As the visions continued, she started to
adopt different personalities when she talked to different people, in the hopes
of gaining more people to call friend and to talk to. This made no one, not even herself realize
what she was truly like. These differing
personalities eventually caught up to her, and she became an outcast, only able
to confide her dreams to herself, making them seem even the more horrible.
