ADELAIDE
I didn’t see Gregor McGregor fall.
I was looking right at him, but I didn’t see. The hands of Fate descended, a curtain over my eyes, to keep me fighting. For what? I wanted to demand, as we stood beside Gregor. I held fast to Dandy, wondering if her stomach roiled as violently as my own. I didn’t know what to say to Aline. Or, rather, I didn’t know how to make her understand that this did not match the figures shown to me in blood.
This was only a brief period of darkness in Gregor McGregor’s life.
“He can’t stay here,” I said quietly to my allies. And then, more boldly, “he deserves better, don’t you think?”
I crouched beside his ruined head, slipped my hands beneath his shoulders to test his weight, and then realize neither of them have followed me. Why should they? We are Gregor’s girls. “Help me. There’s still time – if we find some hallowed ground, if we make it right – ”
The whooshing from below crescendoed. Maybe I’d been wrong. Maybe it wasn’t a monster coming to feast on our mortal flesh; maybe it was merely Fate guiding me along. “Come on!” I planted my feet, shoved my arms as far beneath him as I could manage and took in one long, deep breath, breathing for both Gregor and I. I pulled. He slid towards me, halved head bouncing while I struggled to come to terms with his weight.
And then he’s lifted, Aline and Dandy coming to my rescue. I offer them a bright smile. “Thanks, girls. I’ll keep him steady. Let’s go this way.”
We hike over the lip of the bowl, Dandy and Aline carrying ourfallen waiting ally. I know better than to tell them how every few feet I have to stuff a bit of white matter back into his head; surely if Fate can repair my burned up insides, they can just as easily give Gregor a new brain. Maybe even a better one! I hum, catching the vibrations of the universe in my throat, holding them close. This feels right, this path of vines and building-sized trees and poisonous plants –
Of course it’s right for Gregor.
Down the bowl and into the Rainforest we go, and we are again not alone: a wild-haired fish and a rare beauty stalk us. They’ve probably been staring at us for awhile, but Dandy and Aline are working hard and I’m still humming and then I see him. “Thank you, Fates. Gas Mask Boy! Give us a hand, will ya? We’re going to bring him back to life!” To my allies, “here, where we can still see the light. This is good enough.”
We stop at the base of an enormous tree, clogged with cloying vines and bright flowers that scream TOUCH ME AND DIE. They will work nicely. “Does anyone have any flint? We should smudge the perimeter, for protection. Gather your memories of Gregor. And has anyone seen the girl who – oh Dandy, don’t worry, the pain is how you know you’re alive.” I pat her back and then crouch beside Gregor, swatting away a fly that has tried to lay its eggs in his open eye. “We haven’t come all this way for you to be a nest for flies, have we? Remember who you are, my friend. We’re waiting for you.”
