Hero takes my hand.
"Dangerous," he says, I smile. "And I hope we're making them proud."
I smile.
A moment or so passes before I slip out of the comfort of Hero's hand to find a place to sit on the dark rocks. I face out to sea, watching the line where heaven touches Earth. The water is flooded with brightly coloured sparks, blood leaking from between the stormy clouds. Shadows crawl back home and eventually, the sun falls into the depths of the ocean.
Heavy eyelids, I lose myself watching the waves lap the shore. There is a slight rumble in the jungle which widens my eyes, I only find the anthem that lights up the sky before the stars do; the dead dance across the night alone. Victims of the day, I can only hope I am not taken in the night.
I wake up to grey skies. The two of us are ready for whatever day lies ahead, but there is an agreement to divide for safety. It isn't painful to say a temporary goodbye—pain is a consequence of love, and this isn't love. I realise that I shouldn't be scared to be lonely; I'm dangerous alone. These hands are those a killer and my inner serial killer has been inspired and awoken. I have deconstructed the metaphorical barriers that come with expectation so that I have the means to succeed.
I am a career, after all. Being strong sometimes involves letting go of things, people, places—I'd know all too well. And I am courageous too, and I am not going to let fear of any kind eat away at my strength.
Hero and I go our separate ways and I swear, I will see him again.
Taking footsteps on rock bottom foundations forces me to find calm; slowly, the sharp and jagged rocks round to form stones, the stones dripping into pebbles. I hear crashing water and turn to find a gargantuan wall of water that is dragged towards the arena's core. It's a beautiful monster; I've seen waterfalls before but this is unique.
I imagine that from the top, it is threatening and looks although it has enough power to crush your skull into tiny little pieces and mangle your brain into a mess. The water probably hisses like it has reaped the souls of drowned dreamers who were enticed by the beauty but only became fatalities.
But from here, from the bottom, it is an awe inspiring masterpiece. It is too peaceful though, and these are the Hunger Games so I figure it is only a matter of time before something appears from between the winds to dangle my life in front of me like it is a plaything.
I would only do the same; blood loves blood and I see the pleasure in pain.
Grey skies shift suddenly to an array of vibrant colours; a fluttering mass of butterflies looming over me. I wait, and they stare. The colours speed up and quickly spin around me to become a chemical rainbow of wings that dare me find the pot of gold. I know better and answer their deadly beauty with my own kind; adrenaline forces the grip around my mace to tighten.
I am the eye of this butterfly storm but I am not the calm; I rise and I swing.
