Inside of the urban industrial smokestack that is District 8, is a small tenement where 3 people live. A mother named Alissa Smith, a father named Rolland Smith, and their daughter, Annabelle Smith. As they are asleep, the day of their daughters birthday is fast approaching. Alas, that will be the day where the daughter turns 12. When she will become a candidate for the Reaping. The daughter tosses and turns in her sleep, most likely from nightmares. But why wouldn't she be having nightmares? The Reaping is where children go to die after all. Where the Capitol watches their bloody and gruesome deaths for their sick entertainment. The mother and father try to tell her not to be scared, but however the daughter is. Because she knows they cannot protect her from the Capitol as they try to do from the streets.
Age-Annabelle is currently 12 years old, with her birthday being on August 6th.
District-As I said in the introduction, Annabelle is from District 8. Her family barely scrapes past poverty from the view of where they live.
Appearance-Annabelle is a white skinned girl that is quite below average on her ages height. She also below average on her shoe size, and is sometimes mocked by her classmates for it. She also has to stand on her tiptoes on order to reach certain places like cupboards. Her feet are quite worn due to the poor quality of her footwear, but she tries to hide it so her friends don't get concerned. She has a birthmark on her upper left leg, which she attempts to hide with her skirts and pants because of embarrassment. Every part of her is skinny due to her eating habits, and because of her family's money and them not being able to spend money on good food. She's also very scrawny, to the point where a 6 year old could knock her down and she wouldn't even be able to defend herself. She wishes she could be stronger, but remembers she should feel lucky to even be able to eat.
She has slim black eyebrows along with her dark black hair, it let loose to flow along the wind. She has messy bangs that cover her eyes and sometimes make it hard to see, which mainly irritates her. She attempts to take care of her hair, but it is mainly messy to the point where she could look like a homeless child. She thinks of her black hair as pretty, but still dislikes her bangs and asks her parents to cut them regularly, but they don't due to them needing to use the scissors for other things and being busy all the time. Her head is in a round shape, with her mouth being small and quiet, a mouth you wouldn't expect to suddenly burst into laughter like Annabelle commonly does. She has a small nose and attached earlobes, and a light dash of freckles along her face. She has big, wide hazel eyes that gleam of excitement, like at any moment she'll suddenly squeal with laughter. She feels embarrassed with how she looks due to wanting to be taken seriously, but everyone just views her as a kid sister due to her appearance.
Clothing-Annabelle mainly wears a purple buttoned up top with short sleeves and a black skirt that goes to her knees. On Reaping Day, she is a lot more formal with a purple buttoned dress with a black ribbon around the waist of the outfit. Other than that, the clothes she wears are mainly hand me downs from her mother. Even her main outfit is a hand me down from her. She has worn down shoes made from leather that aren't exactly her size, but she knows not to waste good shoes so she doesn't complain about them. Sometimes her family gets to make new outfits, but they are mainly for the parents since Annabelle doesn't easily outgrow clothes and because she has many hand me downs.
On The Outside-Most people who meet Annabelle are surprised by how quirky she is. She is mainly very eccentric in public, earning her a lot of annoyed people being put off by her. She is also sometimes teased in this regard, but since her father is a teacher the teasers are most likely to get detention, so they normally stay quiet unless her father isn't around. She's more likely to hug you than handshake at your first meeting, and tries to get along with people. To common people, she is viewed as eccentric, bouncing off the walls, and sometimes even annoying and stupid.
To Her Friends and Family-However, to people she's known a long time, she tones it down and is a bit more sentimental with them. She also does this to people who are upset, not wanting to make things worse by acting quirky. She is very nice towards her family, even helping them with their work sometimes. Her father tends to be forgetful, so she studies with him so she can correct him if he screws up in class. She also helps her mother find things too, and helps her sew clothes sometimes. She sometimes tells her friends about her common nightmares due to anxiety, but is scared to tell her parents about them. Most people who personally know her would consider her helpful, yet sometimes a bit of a joker, and that she has her scared side too.
Goals-Annabelle wants three things in her life. To become a teacher like her father, to live in a better place in District 8 with her friends, and to never, EVER be in the Hunger Games. She constantly has nightmares about the games and her dying in the bloodbath, and that's something she wants to avoid more than anything else in the world. Hopefully, that never happens to her, and she gets to fulfill her other dreams. But the Games are always unpredictable, so you can never be sure.
Strengths-Annabelle is sweet, to the point where she prefers to be a pacifist, but knows sometimes violence is necessary. She has a good memory, and her father teaches her a lot just in case she gets reaped for the games. About the wild, berries, plants, animals, anything that might be important. She's good at making friends when she's calmed down, but her eccentricity usually makes that hard to do.
Weaknesses-Her attitude sometimes makes it hard to make friends due to people quickly becoming weirded out, she is not strong in any regard whatsoever expect her mind, and she has to rely on others to stay alive, due to knowing the simple fact that without help, she will quickly be overpowered, making it easy for someone to betray her. She is also very panicky and can sometimes freeze up due to fear, making it hard to escape the situation she is currently in.
History-Annabelle's parents met in school when Alissa came up to Rolland and asked him to help her with math, due to her being gone for few days and not being caught up. Rolland agreed, and after the notes session Alissa decided for him to be her tutor since she needed help in math anyways. Alissa managed to pass the classes because of Rolland, and through their studies together she slowly gained a crush on him. However, Rolland was the first to confess and they started dating. Alissa once cheated on Rolland once she and him were married, but he never found out and the affair ended due to the 3rd person not getting along with Alissa. The 3rd person also had a two year old daughter at time, and constantly pushed the little girl aside because of the relationship, him still ignoring the child to this day. However, she found out she was pregnant after having a night with both Rolland and the 3rd person. She was constantly worried about this, but thankfully the baby looked completely like her expect for the freckles, which she managed to convince Rolland was a trait from her grandparents. So Rolland doesn't even know if Annabelle is really his daughter, and not even Alissa knows who the real father is. Annabelle was born to her parents Alissa and Rolland in the small tenement, due to them not having the time to go to a clinic to have the baby. After her first birthday her parents attempted to have another baby, but remained with an only daughter due to Alissa not being able to have other children. They did almost get a second child, but the two had a miscarriage. They decided to keep the second unborn child a secret from Annabelle so she would never find out about her and become depressed about losing her 'sibling'.
Annabelle grew up with her parents trying to protect her from the world, but while walking around she noticed everything, including the public beatings and robberies. Her parents tried to cover her eyes, but she knew what was going to happen. Her father was a teacher and her mother worked sewing clothes, but their income wasn't the best. Sometimes she witnessed her father raid trashcans in order to get stuff to make shoes for the family. One night, when she was alone as a 7 year old, a man jumped her and took the money she had on her before continuously beating her up with a school bag when she tried to kick him so he would get off of her. She went back home and her father found out it was a student from his class. The family then witnessed him be beat up in the town square the next morning. She soon gained a fear of the dark, being alone, and of large bags, which most people taunt her about due to it being irrational. It also added to her anxiety, only making her feel worse about her situation in District 8. After that, her parents also made her stay mainly in the house unless she was with someone when she headed out.
One day at school when she was ten, Annabelle met a girl named Amy, a girl with bright short red hair in a bob cut with freckles that resembled hers whom was two years her senior. Annabelle constantly talked to her, and they always got along due to them both being eccentric pranksters. Annabelle and Amy are still best friends to this day, and they can commonly be found in the square running around playing tag and joking with each other. They try to be sneaky with their pranks, but commonly get caught and put in detention. Their favorite one was writing false math problems on a math teacher's door, whom was known for getting upset over people doing easy problems wrong. Amy introduced her to some other girls her age, but she never got along with most of them, and the people she did get along with were just normal friends to her. Her mother doesn't like Amy being around Annabelle, and Annabelle can tell this just by looking at how the two act around each other. The mother also refuses to let Anna go to Amy's house under ANY circumstances, which leads Annabelle to ask her herself one simple question: Why?
Other-You may be weirded out about all the things I said about the 3rd person, including his daughter, but that will be important later for Annabelle.
