The heat that emanates from the lava is sweltering, sending the temperature of the arena sky high. The smoke that descends is as equally uncomfortable, charred and acidic whenever you try to take a breath. As night falls and the anthem begins to blast, the tributes that shine down upon you are slightly hazy from the atmosphere, and there’s still a slight glow coming from the obsidian flows.Raquel Izar, District 11
Wendell Gordon, District 12
With two more tributes gone; ten remain. Perhaps victory finally seems something lingering in the distance - you can count the tributes that you need to surpass on your fingers (if you still have them, that is). But visibility is difficult, even more so as the smoke still billows out of the volcano and it’s so hot that the jungle seems to be wilting under the stress.
The night is brutal, and when dawn comes the wind that blows towards you is a relief - cool and inviting, but the sound of waves crashing is oddly loud, as if you were at the beach. Only that’s not possible. And then the waves crest the top of the hills, the horizonline, crashing against the lava which sizzles in pain and quickly heading towards you. So you do the only thing you can think of.
You run.
