JULY JACQUEZ
July sat on the cold tile foyer (which was nothing more than a four by four square in front of her apartment door) and flipped through her phone. A few days ago she'd sent out a blast invite to warm her 'house.' Not a single one of her close friends RSVP'd yes; the moment she and her ex had announced their separation, they'd all suddenly become his friends.
Traitors.
With an empty list of YES responses, July decided to expand her net. She invited her childhood playmates, her former classmates, co-workers from her first job. None of these people could be called friends any more, but at least they didn't know her former husband. They'd have to like her better than him, right? What was he up to anyhow?
She flipped over to his social media accounts and then remembered that she'd stopped following him. And then he'd blocked her. It was a modern tit-for-tat that left her feeling ever more empty. July put down her phone and scanned her new apartment. Well, it was new to her, anyhow. It had been built decades before, cobbled together on top of the noisy shops below. Even with curtains she couldn't block out the happy sounds of shoppers. Fuck all of them.
At least she'd finally been able to make a space her own. Sparse furnishings, neutral colors, a bigger refrigerator to store her wine and vegan frozen meals. It was a half hour past the start of her party. She'd pulled out her cheap glassware and arranged it neatly beside the freshly cut vegetables and non-dairy dip. It all looked so fake, so glossy magazine all-for-show.
She let her head bang back against the door. And heard a knock in response.
She scrambled to her four inch heels, smoothed her skirt, ripped pointed finger nails through her mane of hair. And then opened the door to a ghost from her past. "You made it!" She exclaimed and then remembered her cool. "It's still early, I guess. Please come in. Champagne?"
