Lane Prank.
This day started out as great as any other. And as crazy as any other. I didn't want the stampede of little kids to smash me and my dearest pets, so I had to grab all my belongings, rush outside and dress in the backyard... Nobody is gonna see me there anyways. And it is dangerous to stay inside the Prank house in the morning. It truly becomes a madhouse, even worse.
After I am finally done with my clothes I put my pet boxes into my school bag and almost run out into the street. Suddenly I realize that I forgot to take my homework which was lying under my blanket and has probably been destroyed by my siblings already. I run back inside and begin searching for my copybook frantically. I find it under the stairs, but only two pages have been torn and I don't think that too many people stepped on it before I got to it. In other words - it is completely unharmed.
I run outside, whistling a merry tune and head towards the school building. I don't have many friends there... Maybe just the guy whom I met the other day... I have no idea if he even goes to school, though. I don't know where to find him. That is a little disappointing. There is also Aileen Wheeler - the girl whose sister was murdered in the Games. But I only talked to her once when she helped me with my Maths and then I lost her. She is younger than me, we are not in the same class, I lost her in the crowd and couldn't find her again. Pity. But school is still fun because I can spend all day just listening to interesting things instead of working or cooking, unlike adults who don't have a choice.
I am not late and the first lesson is breathtaking. However, when I come outside during the break and start reading a book, a shadow falls over the first page.
"What's up, Lame Prank?"
It is Ginger, or Gigi - the girl who likes to make fun of me. I don't mind. I smile and reply in a cheerful way:
"Hi, Ginger! Good to see you! And my name is Lane, I hope you are clever enough to remember it someday."
The girl makes an annoyed sound, but doesn't stop teasing:
"Oh, look, Lame here has got a book. How sweet. Is it called "How to be lame?"
Uh-oh. I don't mind her, but I want to read. And she obviously doesn't have any intention to leave me alone.
