The bed carries a secret that none of the Laws discover until recently. Carter's the one to find it. A rather old brown journal with the edges folding from a body constantly being pressed into it. He spent days sleeping on Mitchell's bed since he died because he felt safe there, but he didn't notice anything until he ended up dropping something into the side of the mattress. The journal looks like it's been through hell like Mitchell had, but he didn't dare read it. The name Mitchell Laws written in a deep black marker is shown at the top. Carter inhales a breath and leaves the room to find a place in Twelve where it's quiet.
Then he opens the journal, which has some small water stains along the pages, but it's still readable. Fingers gently teasing the paper as he can feel himself wanting to see into Mitchell's head.
I'm gonna be blunt. I don't really get the whole idea of writing, but mom gave me this thinking it'd be a better outlet on my emotions than punching walls. I swear I don't have anger issues, but there's something that always bugs me and I really don't know what it is. Maybe it's just being an angry teenager who never got a childhood like my brothers. I'm proud to have taken care of them though.
Jack's started to smile more this week than before. He's been through so much that I don't even know how I'd have gotten through it. He's starting to talk more than usual. I'm not gonna push him into talking more, but I am still quite mad at him. There's still scars on my back because he left me, but I could only hope that we make up. He's not so bad once you break his exterior. I just wish I knew why he left me then. Was it fear? Was it just bad timing? Or did he really not care about me? I pulled him out of harms way once. He just couldn't do the same. That's okay. He's still family to me. I've learned how to steal from him, though he's kept his promise so far of not teaching Carter.
Speaking of Carter, I think we're going into town today. I saved up some money for us to get some candy like he always enjoys. That boy has more of a sweet tooth than the smaller children. It's still the best thing in the world to make him smile. It just brightens up the room. He's good at calming me when I get angry, though he never knows it. Always some new card trick that he wants to show me. One day he'll be better at them than I am, but for now I just hope he sticks to it. The reaping is supposed to be coming up soon. All I hope is neither of them are reaped.
Carter's calling me to leave. Guess I better put this away before he finds it. That'd be kind of embarrassing. I could never tell him the truth behind everything. He doesn't need to know about our family's problems. He just needs to find himself. Jack's also coming with according to his shouts too. Well i guess this is a see you until I decide to write next.
P.S. Carter's sweet tooth costed me half of what I stole today. It was worth it.
Carter closes the journal remembering that day. All he can hear is a shout across the place from Jack to get up and join him for some lunch. They haven't spent time since Mitchell's death, but he needed to come back to the world around him. Hands move to the cards in his pocket as he shouts to Jack pulling out a pack of cards. It's the first time he's touched it them since Mitchell's death
"Hey, wanna see a new trick?"
