She's completely aware of the situation, but it doesn't really hit her until she's sitting alone in a room with an ornate rug and a velvet couch that itches when she sits down.
What the fuck. What the fuck. What the fuck.
This is a mess. And then the fire builds back up in her stomach again, having subsided for just a moment in the madness. She's not coming b- no, she's coming back. She already told herself this. And whatever she puts her mind to, she completes. It's as simple as that, it's always been as simple as that. Even when the odds seemed impossible, she's always gotten out of it. Why isn't this any different? It's not. It's not.
Besides, she has things to go back to. Her crew needs her to rally them into formation when they romp across the junkyards on their days off. Her mother wants her, she's sure of it - even though everyone else has drifted away, the three of them are all they have left. Mother, Alice, Ava. For years it's been each other as one by one everyone else found other priorities, other families, trying to get away from the legacy of the Sullivans. Trying to walk away from the game.
It's a different game now. And it's one where she's the grandmaster instead of Nox and Cleo. It's one where she's down a team. But there's only one thing to do when the going gets tough - face it head on.
Her crew arrives first, hats removed as if they're attending a wake ("Cut it the fuck out I'm getting the hell out of that fucking arena if it's the last thing I do." "I mean, dude, it might literally be the last thing you do." "Yeah, that's the point dumbass. Phineas if you cry over this I swear to god-"). A few other friends trickle in and out with warm wishes and awkward "see you later"s and soon she's alone again. The clock ticks obnoxiously.
Then the doors open and a figure is ushered in, "five minutes" barked as rough as sandpaper. Her eyes light up, her mouth erupts into a smile. "Hey Ava," she says, as casual as she can in this situation. Ava was young, so young when Cleo was taken away - Alice wasn't even all that old. This is different.
And she doesn't know what to say. I'll be back? Take care of mother while I'm gone? Mother can take care of herself though. See you on the flip side? Don't get too upset while I'm gone? Tell our other siblings to get their fucking act together and make this a family again? Rather - there's too much to say. And she doesn't want to lecture.
So she hugs her instead.
