The Demented - (throughout) A cloaked figure with black, bony fingers and a face concealed by shadow, nobody knows what inspired this nightmare of a muttation. The mere presence of it seemingly drops the temperature in the air around it. When Gamemakers try to locate the files for this beast, they seemed to have mysteriously disappeared. What it known is based on its behavior - a lone mutt that limps, lunges, and scratches with long claws. Its primary weapon is a paralytic agent found in its teeth, which will temporarily reduce its prey to an incapacitated state. Nobody knows what its original purpose was, but the guesses are endless. Any unfortunate tributes who encounter this mutt should be extremely careful; it is unknown what provokes an attack.
HP: error (No food classification).
Scarecrow Scully -- (Wheat Field) Scarecrows existed before Panem did, but the Capitol saw potential in what was used in lower districts rather than the advanced technologies they had created to prevent pests from appearing. Appearing harmless, the simple scarecrow was modified to prevent people, not just pests, from trespassing in restricted areas. All but one was destroyed, which was later relocated into the 77th games. This modified robotic mutt guards the wheat field, with sword-like extensions added to its straw fingers for maximum defense. Rumors have it that this mutt also developed an AI with greedy intentions, snatching items from bags and pockets to collect. Tributes should be wary of this menace when wandering into its territory.
HP: Straw lol. (No food classification. Not poisonous)
Swoopers - (throughout) Someone created these animals to match the growing craze of giant pets (giant ants, giant mice, giant worms) that seems to happen every couple of decades. These oversized birds of prey- a mix between a falcon and an owl- were far from the perfect pet, with a tendency to try eat and kill anything that moved and farms of them ended up being taken into Governmental control after which they were trained to hunt down runaways and escapee’s in the wilderness of Panem. Around 4 foot tall, these creatures once came in a variety of breeds but have been bred to resemble a barn owl with a falcons beak and claws. They have heart shaped faces, piercing shrieks, talons the size of kitchen knives, a beak that can crush through bone, and a head that can turn 360 degrees and extend. These owls grow more terrifying the longer you watch one. They circle their prey like Falcons, gliding on the wind before diving fast towards the earth to skewer their prey with their beak.
HP: 20 (Classified as small game)
Terrortots - (throughout) Little girls and boys love their toys- so so very much. Until they get broken, lost, destroyed by unfortunate circumstances. Created as a fun and upcoming childs toy, these creepy colls were originally just robotic dolls that could come alive to play with their owners. The size of a toddler, these toys were a hit with the kids- that is, until they got broken and abandoned by their owners. It was almost as if something in the dolls’ AI switched- they became violent when they were forgotten, stealing knives for weapons to attack somewhat unsuspecting families who had already replaced Miss Sally with another doll just like her! After one too many mutilations occured due to the violent dolls, they were recalled. Left to rot and decay in an empty warehouse- that is, until, the Gamemakers thought they could be put to use. Most of these dolls are a far cry from their original looks- many have half melted faces, some have lost the lower half of their jaw, leaving them gaping and wide eyed and some have no eyes, hair torn from their scalp and mutilated hands where children younger than 3 chewed at them- oh and they have a tendency to carry knives….not that the Gamemakers risked trying to pry the weapons from their plastic, mottled fingers.
HP: 25 (No food classification. Not poisonous)
Hollows - (Gallows, Wheat Field) These children are yet another capitol mistake. They are modeled after a child who was killed long ago during a terror attack on the capital, while wearing a gas mask. The Capitol medics tried to rescue the child with un-tested nanotechnology, but it could not save them. It turned them into a monster- or so the story goes. Truth be told, these ‘children’ are mere robots donned with a gas mask that were created to coerce and frighten rebels during the Dark Days, luring unsuspecting Rebels by crying and asking “Are you my mummy???”. It would not take long before they would begin attacking the rebels with whatever weapon they could lay their hands on. In this arena, though, some of the empty children look oddly...familiar... despite having gas masks for faces.
HP: 15 (No food classification. Not poisonous)
Haunted lights - (throughout) These mutts started as hidden secrets, lamps for labs hidden beneath the ground, their tasks never likely to see the star-studded lights of the Capitol above. It's such a shame that even such simple things turn into something more, something sinister. Some could say they look like fallen spirits or floating stars, dragged into existence, flickering on, off, on, off, on, traveling in vibrant packs to illuminate everything in their path. A careful listen sounds like the air is talking, quiet whisperings from a source with no mouth. Is it the air, or just your mind pulling a trick on you?
HP: 10 (No food classification. Not poisonous)
Mutts credited to old games:
Kodama — (Throughout) If one did not know better, they would think the Kodoma a ghost. The creature moves in absolute silence, with a body that looks somewhat similar to a human's in that it stands upright and have two arms and two legs. The similarities stop there, though, for this particular mutt has a wide, round abdomen, no fingers or toes, and an oval head with two dark eyes and an equally dark mouth, so that the three features can barely be distinguished from each other. The rest of its body is opalescent, smooth, and free of even the slightest feature, and it's tiny, maybe a foot and a half tall at most (link). The Kodama are generally a puzzling creature. Unlike most mutts, they were created to cheer up people in the Capitol who were old, sick, or depressed, meant to be a kind of therapy. Their behavior didn't exactly go as planned, though - the creatures would often just stand there, making an occasional call that sounded high pitched and distant. They amused patients, however, and were therefor kept. In the Arena, they have been known to be actually helpful. They travel in packs and often do little more than watch tributes with their wide eyes and bring them food. Still, their presence has been known to be greatly calming to many, even the unlucky teenagers slated for almost certain death.
N/A HP. No food classification. Not poisonous.
Banshee - (Throughout) You’ll know the Banshee approaches long before you see her grisly wings, and you will know her by her wailing song. This grey predator bird keens for the dead, to mourn their lives and celebrate their transition. She has a long silver beak and matching talons. She will not hesitate to attack those who remain too close to the dead.
15 hp. Poisonous. Not edible. Appears after a tribute has died. (71st)
Hellcats — (Skeletal Trees, Haunted Woods, Ivied Forest, Cornucopia) Though the name "Hellcat" was an attempt by the creating scientists to pull from the wild popularity of their canine counterparts, this feline certainly does look like a beast straight out of hell. With DNA borrowed from tigers, lions, and the extinct saber-toothed cats, this felie has a luxurious orange coat with black-maned males. Bred for aesthetic reasons as well as for the agility that their hound counterparts lack, Hellcats have eyes that span from amber to flame in color, ringed by a dark circle of black, as well as eight-inch fangs that protrude from their mouths at all times. These cats are excellent climbers and battle strategists; additionally, they have a great sense of smell, though not to the degree of the hound version.
35 hp. Not poisonous. No food classification.
Nightwing Troll — (throughout) An odd sort of hybrid between a harpy and a troll, this lumbering green-skinned creature has the DNA of both a gorilla and a vulture (its colors are genetically engineered). It prefers to perch upon low-hanging branches, using the feathered webbing between its arms and torso to glide between trees or onto the ground- making these awkward creatures surprisingly stealthy. As very primitive beings they have only the basic ability to communicate with one another through grunts and barks as well as fashioning crude weapons with rocks and sticks.
20 HP. Not Poisonous. Classified as Large Game
Dice Roll: spiked blunt, knife, or spear (you may only choose one weapon for the duration of the mandate)
Delivery Words - (throughout) The docile and loyal Delivery Words (commonly called 'Words') are extremely adaptable and capable of crossing lands and bodies of water to deliver mail for the cost of a couple sunflower seeds. Delivery Words usually prefer to fly away from combat. Their meat is highly delicious and packed with essential vitamins. It is not hard to spot a Delivery Word, with their black feathers, gray-specked eyes, and tendency to honk loudly; however, Words can be hard to capture with its ability to withstand high acidity.
10 HP. Classified as Small Game. Not poisonous. (70th)
Macromantula — (Haunted Wood, Skeletal Trees, Ivied Forest) The intent was to create a larger species of spider, one that would spin thicker, stronger silk that could be used by the Capitol for various purposes. Capitol scientists were able to achieve this with the genes of a normal tarantula and some growth hormone; however, rather than the house cat-sized spider they’d been aiming for, they’d ended up with a massive brute of an arachnid, as tall as a small elephant with a leg span of over ten feet. These beasts were untamable; they would encase their caregivers in thick webs of silk, then inject their lethal poison into their bloodstream, killing them within the hour. After seeing how serious the problem was, the Capitolites decided that these creations could not be allowed to live; they managed to kill most, but some of the Macromantulas escaped into the wild, and continue to multiply deep within the darkest forests of Panem.
Poisonous. No food classification. 30 hp.
Mutt Contest winners:
Dante’s Ivy - (Haunted woods, Ivied Forest) - Credit to Dars
Based upon Devil's Snare from Harry Potter, this fast-growing plant has been bred to be lethal. Originally, it was used to conceal and protect capitol goods during the war. It was simple, throw a blanket of the inky-black ivy over a couple of chests and watch as it snatched rebel after rebel, like flies to a web. It reacts to movement, and the more a person struggles, the tighter its grip becomes. But it was not a perfect monster. It assumed that, should someone remain still after being caught, it was dead. When the capitol realized that the rebels were starting to catch on, they began exploring other options, especially when they also discovered the Ivy's acute sensitivity to light.
HP: 30
Dice roll: whip
Honeydrop Tree - (Haunted Woods, Ivied Forest) - Credit to Shrimp
"The nectar of the gods," the head botanist claimed in her speech. And indeed it was - in a matter of months, beverage manufacturer Honey & Co. has risen to acclaim for their beautiful orchard of "Honeydrop Trees": Strong, silver branches, drooping slightly from the weight of many golden orbs. A cross-mixture of honeycrisp apple, honeydew, and lychee, the delicious fruit is about the size of a large orange and must be peeled before eating. Its taste is rich, with the sweetness of fruit and the sharpness of wine, or a hard cider. But not only is it alcoholic, it contains important nutrients and fiber! Since its release, Honeydrop fruit has become common at the wealthiest parties, for isn't "fruit that can get you drunk" better than plain-ol-fruit?
N/A HP (Edible, with an intoxication roll for the next day)
Dream Taurens - (Wheat field, Gallows) - Credit to Rave
Created from the hands of Petelia Quartz, the tauren's main purpose in live is simply looking cuter than the average cow - in itself, an advantage. Bred a light lavender and equipped with dragon wings and tiny bull horns, these bovines are deemed docile and near-pet like, rumored to give better dreams to nearby sleepers. These serpent hybrids, however, have seen some modifications in order to be viable for life in the arena, including a much more aggressive and toxic masculine approach -- fighting even each other on occasion. These free range bred bison are impossible to tame and excruciatingly temperamental, attacking near on sight with adorable, gem-encrusted horns.
