I had gotten out of the bloodbath alive, not paying too much attention to where my allies had ended up. Now that I was out of there, though, I hoped they were safe, too. I actually had found people here that I cared about whether or not I lived or died, and I felt the same way about them. It was an odd feeling, especially because I didn’t have much of it back home. My parents certainly didn’t care about me in that way. That was for sure.
The ever-looming darkness of the arena was giving me chills, and I liked it. For some reason, dark and gloomy things made me feel better than the light and cheerful aspects of life. Living, however, was still high on the list of priorities. I wasn’t ready to die yet, and if someone pounced on me, I didn’t care what happened to anyone else, in all honesty. I had to get out of there. I wouldn’t be dying, and definitely not this early on.
As I stumbled into an area that resembled an ivied forest, I was careful to keep an eye out for other tributes. I wasn’t wanting to be attacked, so I made sure I had my axe at the ready. While staying on guard, I gathered some things that I needed, fixed myself up a bit, and continued to search for my allies. I’d found some plants that I recognized as helpful due to the stations I took in the training center, and used them to do some healing on myself. My eyes then continued to scan the area.
”Bruce?” I asked not too loudly. ”Ella? Tobias?” I didn’t want to draw attention of anyone outside of my alliance, but I still needed to find those that were willing to fight at my side. I kept my hand clenched tightly around my axe’s handle and kept looking around the forested domain. Cautious, I stepped quietly. They had to be around here somewhere.
”Damn it, where are you guys?” I muttered quietly under my breath. ”Show yourselves…” I wasn’t going to attack them- no, of course not. Why would I do that? We were allies. We were meant to protect each other at this point. I just needed to meet up with them and reconverge.
Eventually, I leaned up against a tree, axe still in hand, and just watched whatever might decide to pass me by. I was keeping my eyes peeled for my allies, as well as any enemies that may appear. If Jamie and the others back home had to watch me die on their television screens, especially so early on in these Games, I wasn’t sure how they’d react, and I’d never be coming back to make it better. Therefore, I had to make it better now, and the only way I could do that was by surviving, and maybe even making it home.
When I was buried in my thoughts, though, I saw movement, causing me to hold more tightly onto my axe. I tried my best to strain my vision enough to spot what the movement was. Then, I saw- it was one of the people I’d been looking for. It was one of my allies. One of the people that I knew, or at least hoped, didn’t want to kill me quite yet. Sure, there could only be one winner, so we’d probably have to fight each other in the end, but now wasn’t that time. We still had a chance to work together and take down the enemies. I then made my way over to Bruce at a bit of a jog.
”Hey, Bruce. I’m glad to see that you made it out alive. You look a bit banged up, though.” I said this to him with a bit of a laugh, hoping to bring humor to the situation. Unfortunately, that would be rather difficult to do in a death match. I hoped he wouldn’t get mad at me for trying to joke around a little bit. After all, I always thought that humor was a good way at lightening the mood.
”Really? I didn’t notice,” Bruce replied, his tone sarcastic. Clearly, he wasn’t amused by me.
”Sorry man, I was just trying to make light of it all.” I was genuine in my apology, and hoped that the young boy wouldn’t just lash out in anger.
